i want to develop a website

Posted 19 November 2010 - 11:51 AM

Hey guys, i planned to develop a social-like website, not like facebook. but i just wanna learn to make one.
So what do you think about learning any web programming language? i mean, what is the most important language/thing i must cover?
I have a basic knowledge about HTML and i am learning PHP now. is that enough? :P i'm really noob at web programming as i don't gave much attention to this field.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

To make a solid social networking site you will need good PHP skills, good CSS and HTML skills and you must be exceedingly good in MySQL. For interactivity, learn Javascript. Also have a look at how to create relational databases as you will need one if you are going to build a social networking site.

That's my advice based on the Open Source platform.

You can do all of the above the Microsoft way by using ASP/.NET and SQL.

Appreciate the advice Ryan. but as far as I know, PHP is the language and MySQL is the database right? I'm not clear about that part because for me, there's too many things to catch in developing a user-oriented website.

That's correct, PHP is the language and MySQL is the database. However, MySQL has its own language to interact with it. You use the PHP language to interact with the database by doing queries and updating records in the MySQL language. Sorry if I have confused you but I would definitely learn HTML and CSS first before you go onto Javascript and PHP/MySQL.

Oh i see now. Wouldn't it be necessary to learn HTML because many of the editors nowadays have wysiwyg function? just wondering though.

That's true to a certain extent but I definitely wouldn't recommend it. Wizzy wig editors generate poorly written code and it won't offer you the flexibility of designing a website from the ground up. Poorly written code makes it hard to maintain and edit without disrupting other elements of your website. In most cases, it also won't adhere to web standards.

Having said all of that, you can find well coded templates that you can edit in a wizzy wig editor but you aren't really going to learn anything doing that. And if you where to take on PHP or Javascript without any knowledge of HTML and CSS, you will find it more difficult.

If I were you I would start substantially smaller, you'll burn out trying to code anything big while you're just starting out in PHP. Start small, make basic applications and move up to basic database functions, connections, and interactions. NEVER try and hit the ground running unless you have a solid foothold on what you're going for.
