yeah but i'm not talking about the random person who just doesn't care to talk about fight club, i am talking about people who claim it's one of their favorites and watch it all the time and have posters of it up on the wall.

RULE #1: DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB!

i think you are missing my point in that you and i are doing some kind of analysis on the story. we read/watch, think about it, and then move on. the people i am talking about are the 'dude they were like, fighting and shit and it was awesome. that totally helped them feel better when they felt bad. FUCKING SWEET. *hangs poster on wall*' type of people.

*snip*

so you are basically saying that it is ok that they are willfully ignorant of greater themes within their 'favorite' work? agree to disagree.

I'm saying that it is ok to be willfully prejudice of opposing themes within their 'favorite' work. May that prejudice be caused from ignorance or general dislike of. Because there are varying themes throughout the story that are diametrically opposing.

yes, that's true, but as a piece of work you enjoy i just think people should be able to discuss it and think about those things. not ignore it because they just don't happen to like it.

What if they don't want to?

I bet there are several people in this forum who like the film. Probably have watched it several times, would watch it again, may even have a poster of it. BUT I bet of those people very few want to even approach our discussion about the movie... because they probably think you and I are fools for even having this discussion.

Yet we are engrossed in it. And have given some degree of importance to it.

Who is wrong? I say neither.

Not to say there aren't dumb shits who just like something because their friends do. I just don't think that it's as pervasive as you originally made it.
