Desperately in need of a second pair of eyes to help me check through

Posted 02 December 2010 - 01:05 PM

This code snippet is supposed to disable and reenable different radiobuttons based on choices. I tried testing it but it does nothing. I am sure the logics of the code is correct, just not sure about the syntax. Would someone please oh please feel sorry for me and help me out please?

<script type="text/javascript"><!--
var val;
function D()
{

if (document.aspnetform.SessionA.checked==true)
{
	for(var x=0;x<=24;x++)
	{
		document.aspnetform.SessionB[x].disabled=true;
		document.aspnetform.SessionC[x].disabled=true;
	}

}
else
{
for(var x=0;x<=24;x++)
	{
		document.aspnetform.SessionB[x].disabled=false;
		document.aspnetform.SessionC[x].disabled=false;
	}

}
if (document.aspnetForm.SessionB[24].checked==true)
{
	for(var x=0;x<=24;x++)
	{
		document.aspnetform.SessionC[x].disabled=true;
	}

}
else
{
	for(var x=0;x<=24;x++)
	{
		document.aspnetform.SessionC[x].disabled=false;
	}

}
if (document.aspnetForm.SessionC[24].checked==true)
{
	for(var x=0;x<=24;x++)
	{
		document.aspnetform.SessionB[x].disabled=true;
	}

}
else
{
	for(var x=0;x<=15;x++)
	{
		document.aspnetform.SessionB[x].disabled=false;
	}

}
    for (var x=0;x<=15;x++)
	{
			if (document.aspnetForm.SessionB[x].checked==true)
			{
					for(var i=0;i<=15;i++)
				{
					document.aspnetForm.SessionC[i].disabled=true;
				}
			}
		}
		else
		{
			for(var i=0;i<=15;i++)
			{
				document.aspnetForm.SessionC[i].disabled=false;
			}
		}
    }
}
function clearFunction(val)
{
	if (val==1)
	{
		for (var x=0; x<=15; x++)
		{
		        document.aspnetForm.SessionB[x].checked=false;
			document.aspnetForm.SessionC[x].disabled=false;

		D();
	}
	else if (val==2)
	{

		        document.aspnetForm.SessionB[x].disabled=false;
		}
            	D();
	}
}

You mismatched a brace "{". Your code indentation was messed up and I sincerely believe that if you forced yourself to adhere to a stricter indentation model, you would not have had this problem. I've indented the code but I haven't fixed the error because I don't know what you wanted to do. (That's another thing.. you gotta use comments. There's no way you're gonna look back at your code and remember what you were doing).

The error is at lines 65-73:
<script type="text/javascript"><!--
var val;
function D()
{

	if (document.aspnetform.SessionA.checked==true)
	{
		for(var x=0;x<=24;x++)

			document.aspnetform.SessionC[x].disabled=true;
		}

	}
	else
	{

		{
			document.aspnetform.SessionB[x].disabled=false;
			document.aspnetform.SessionC[x].disabled=false;

I got that extra brace out and only the clear functions go. Any suggestions on how to actually disable some of the buttons in a radiobutton group?

Here is an updated version of the code. For some reason the disables are not working in the D() and i am not sure why. Do you think i did this wrong?

<script type="text/javascript"><!--
var val;
function D()
{
 //if this checkbox is checked then disable both radiobutton groups otherwise they stay enabled
if (document.aspnetform.SessionA.checked==true)
{
	for(var x=0;x<=23;x++)
	{
		document.aspnetform.SessionB[x].disabled=true;
		document.aspnetform.SessionC[x].disabled=true;
	}

}
else
{
for(var x=0;x<=23;x++)
	{
		document.aspnetform.SessionB[x].disabled=false;
		document.aspnetform.SessionC[x].disabled=false;
	}

}
//if item is checked in the radiobutton group disable an item in another, otherwise it stays active
if (document.aspnetForm.SessionB[23].checked==true)
{
	for(var x=0;x<=24;x++)
	{
		document.aspnetform.SessionC[x].disabled=true;
	}

}
else
{
	for(var x=0;x<=24;x++)
	{
		document.aspnetform.SessionC[x].disabled=false;
	}

}
if (document.aspnetForm.SessionC[24].checked==true)
{
	for(var x=0;x<=24;x++)
	{
		document.aspnetform.SessionB[x].disabled=true;
	}

}
else
{
	for(var x=0;x<=15;x++)
	{
		document.aspnetform.SessionB[x].disabled=false;
	}

}
//if any of these items are checked in the radiobutton group then disable items similar in a another button group otherwise they stay active
    for (var x=0;x<=15;x++)
	{
			if (document.aspnetForm.SessionB[x].checked==true)
			{
					for(var i=0;i<=15;i++)
				{
					document.aspnetForm.SessionC[i].disabled=true;
				}
			}

		else
		{
			for(var i=0;i<=15;i++)
			{
				document.aspnetForm.SessionC[i].disabled=false;
			}
		}
    }
}
//this function unchecks any radiobutton thats checked in this sesssion and reactives then if they are disabled
function clearFunction(val)
{
	if (val==1)
	{
		for (var x=0; x<=15; x++)
		{
		        document.aspnetForm.SessionB[x].checked=false;
			document.aspnetForm.SessionC[x].disabled=false;
		}
		D();
	}
	else if (val==2)
	{
		for (var x=0; x<=15; x++)
		{
			document.aspnetForm.SessionC[x].checked=false;
		        document.aspnetForm.SessionB[x].disabled=false;
		}
            	D();
	}
}

Re: Desperately in need of a second pair of eyes to help me check through

Your problem might be that with HTML, if the disabled attribute is there at all, the element is disabled:
<input disabled>

And it doesn't even matter what value it's set to; it's still disabled:
<input disabled="true">
<input disabled="false">
<input disabled="disabled">
<input disabled="peanuts">

So instead of setting the value to "false", you need to remove the attribute altogether. There's a method called removeAttribute:
element.removeAttribute("disabled");

P.S. your code still isn't properly indented. You should indent everything within the function body. Indenting will save you tons of headaches.

So are you saying it would remove it all together. an example of this would be: document.aspnetForm.SessionC[i].removeAttribute("disabled");

Hm, well that would lead me to think that document.aspnetForm.SessionC[i] is not a valid reference to the input element. You can find out what element it's pointing to by alerting the element with an alert(). Try this code:
	for(var x=0;x<=23;x++)
	{
		alert(document.aspnetform.SessionB[x]);
		document.aspnetform.SessionB[x].disabled=true;

		alert(document.aspnetform.SessionC[x]);
		document.aspnetform.SessionC[x].disabled=true;
	}

And see what it alerts. You can also try these variants:
alert(document.aspnetform.SessionB[x].tagName);// gets the tag name e.g. "input"
alert(document.aspnetform.SessionB[x].getAttribute("disabled"));//gets the value of the disabled attribute
alert(document.aspnetform.SessionB[x].outerHTML); // may not work. gets the html for the element: <input ... >
alert(document.aspnetform.SessionB[x].innerHTML); // gets the innerHTML. inputs don't have any though..
document.aspnetform.SessionB[x].style.border = "1px solid red"; // draws a red border around the element

The thing is the clear function works in terms of unchecking but disabling wont work. also the first checkbox that does the checking does not work

Why don't you post all of your code for the alerting process.
