Changes history of a file

Posted 03 December 2010 - 02:32 AM

Hello everybody,
I'm Tommy, and I come from Italy ^^ I'm a network administrator (both Linux and Windows enviroment), not that keen on programming!
I have an issue I should handle: customer has several files that thik could be changed in the past without reason. Till I came, he didn't have any software to track changes in his network. He'd like to gather the history of the modification (just date/time/and the modifier) of several file (.xlxs, .docx, etc... all windows files).
Is there something written in those files that tells me that informations (creation date, last modify etc are easly viewable)...

Thanks a lot in advance!!
And congratulation for such a great forum!!

\\ Tommy

I don’t know, whether those files contain such data, but some of them (creation date, last modified, etc.) are accessible through the file system. e.g. filemtime(), fileatime(), filectime() (ref.)

Thanks for the answer Dorm!
Yup, I got those info already, but, as you said, I was wondering if there were some kind of bits, kept in the file, written every time you modify a file!

your main problem would rather be to open the files with PHP in the first place …

Actually I don't know much about php, but if you say that with that it should be possible to gather those info, I think it would be worth it!
