I've seen pre-CF9 references wherein using CF's built in CFAJAX stuff it generates code in the page header that won't validate as XHTML. If I recall correctly, there was no fix for this other than to abandon CFAJAX altogether and use something like JQuery.

That said, for the minimal amount of Ajax I tend to use on my projects, I always use JQuery so perhaps others who have had more experience with CFAJAX will chime in here.

Built-in ColdFusion AJAX methods are awful. They are kind of like using ColdFusion Flash Forms. Old and out dated. If you are really looking to build a rich user experience use jQuery or another Javascript framework. jQuery is really nice and easy to learn to get the basics done (even if you have no prior knowledge of Javascript). Also if you are looking to use the CF Ajax windows, and div and other things like that go out and grab jQuery UI as well.

jQuery: www.jquery.com
jQuery UI: www.jqueryui.com
