Kudos on the write up... a few tangential questions that people might still have:
Where's the lady from? A game or just an image?
How do you decide on the image parts? Are you clicking the 'lucky' button on google images with a vauge search term, or was it more deliberate?

oh and side note - *I* notice. I can't help *but* notice the glaringly offensive sixteen pixels. ;)

I'm not quite sure where the lady is from, I got her from a renderpack ages ago, but I'm pretty sure she's from a game.

I usually just pick random renders and throw them together and move them around until I get what I like. I got lucky this time and didn't have to do much, I guess.

Here's a bow I made in GIMP. I was trying to give it a 3d effect but some parts didn't come out quite right.

I would honestly avoid layer effects at all cost in art. Since anyone can use them, and easily at that even, it shows very quickly. It's the equivalent of using comic sans in a design.

I don't know about that. Layer effects can be used very well in some instances if done subtly. There's no rule that says you have to make art the hard way.

Then again of all the people that use them how often could you really call it subtle?

I use outer glow sparsely for atmosphere in celestial art but I also heavily modify it after I put an effect down.

The thing is people need to learn to do things without effects and gradually reintroduce them as they become proficient, otherwise they become a crutch to their design skills.

The same can be said of excessive adjustment layers and gradient maps. Learn to lay down color and work with it instead of manipulating it to death.

The absolute WORST thing you can use is filters. Outer glows and the like can be useful... but filters 95% of the time are useless. In fact, in the last year or so... the only things I have used them for is textures for website backgrounds (obviously very subtle).

Working on a book called "The Black Manifesto" and still trying to get a solid grip on the face of the main character. I'd say I've taken a pretty good shot at it on this one.

@lemonchicken - so tell me what's going on there? Are they intentionally gray and muted? Did you do much more than clean up a stock image of Bubbi's little angel and slap it on a nifty background? What drove you to those images?

yeh the squared background is a sort of filter that i think enhances the original pics,
my monitor displays them as vivid and crisp, not grey and muted lol

yeh, i cleaned up the pic in terms of saturation intensity, opacity and offset..so it would look as clear as possible against the squares.

what drove me to these images? that's a good question..
the 1st is an adaption of a daft punk album cover, who i think makes fairly decent music.
the 2nd, wow. just wow. it gives off happy vibes does it not?
as for the 3rd, i find it humorous and mildly relevant to my experience over here at dic.

when i was making the 1st, i wanted the 'droids' to be *part* of the background, blended into the mass of squares generating a kind of lost-in-dimension type thing. maybe you can see what i mean.

:)
