I've been doing some reading lately (coders at work- good book, get it if you haven't already), and one thing that has consistently come up with everything I've read so far is big programs running on servers- especially web sites (livejournal.com comes to mind especially). This is a topic I've never seen discussed anywhere else, except in the theoretical sense when somebody says, eg, "that's how google crawls the web".
So, that's the setup. This has gotten me to wonder about all the big sites most of us visit on a daily or weekly basis- how does the pirate bay website work? how do amazon's websites work, and how do they fit together? craigslist? ebay? How do systems like Steam or the iTunes app/music store work? where can I find out more about these?
