Thought I would share this. Apparently Facebook hosts an annual programming challenge that allows programmers to compete against eachother for prizes. Sounds interesting, anybody else going to try it out? Registration opens on the 20th of this month.

of course they pick x-mas season for it... I'm sorry but that speaks volumes to me about exactly what I already believe about the facebook company.

Looks like a fan page, not much to do with Facebook. It would probably be much better organized and promoted, though with Facebook....... You never know.

1. it doesn't take place during christmas season, it takes place next year. REGISTRATION starts on the 20th, i'm sure it will be open for a while

2. if it did take place around christmas, why does that matter? what does it taking place around christmas happen to reinforce about your sure to be concise beliefs?

As I said, I only peeked, and that was at the puzzles. So in the case that it's a long running thing, then my statement isn't as valid.

actually my beliefs about facebook aren't concise. Because they are rather conflicted. I didn't voice them directly because I didn't feel it necessary to derail this thread which I know will be very controversial opinions on the matter.

Unlike most threads where I go into spewing rants, that is the meaning and intent of those threads. To be large debates and discussions. But this one is actually of some substance (and actually I personally think would be better suited for the 'Corner Cubicle'). So yeah, I don't feel like shooting it down any stupid path.

But it is in 'The Lounge', so I left a little comment. A rather subjective one at that.

the puzzles have been there for a while. just like the ones google provides. the hacker cup starts january 7th and ends in march. so yes, you were just wrong about the dates of the event, period. i still fail to see how if the event took place on christmas day itself it would matter.

Yep I was wrong to base it off of posts I read here. I wasn't going for seriousness... you of all people should understand candid remarks.


As for your failure to understand the implication... interpret it how ever you want. That's why it was as vague as I left it. I'm not always 'so serious', I'm a guy with 'google it' tattooed on his ass, relax a bit.

Registration starts on the 20th of December, the reason it states being founded in 2011 is that the competition actually begins in the year 2011. It will be in the middle of January, so no worries for those that disagree with programming on Christmas.

The idea behind the competition is not be a better cracker/malicious hacker etc. The puzzles modi123 posted a link to are a good example of what we can expect from the competition. They are using the term hacker in it's original tense, maybe I should have been more clear about that. It should be a fun and challenging competition, with the top 25 going to Facebook's headquarters to compete for the top prizes. Even if you may not like Facebook, this is about programming and problem solving. Hell, i'll be happy if I make it past the qualification round. I'm not an experienced programmer by any means, but i'm up for the challenge. I think that is really what this competition is about.

@creativecoding I believe so, I wrote a quick solution that I might submit. Yeah they do offer quite a few languages, C++ for myself.
