Is our knowledge of facts in "jeopardy"?

Posted 14 December 2010 - 01:12 PM

I found this to be interesting and will most likely watch it but was just wondering what you all thought about it.
IBM as a Jeopardy contestant

It will be cool to see how the machine interprets things like puns and the subtleties that most of the jeopardy questions pose.

I'm thinking this will just be another one of those games in which computers beat humans... from chess in 1952 to this now..

The fact that there are now people in the world who do not immediately get that reference shakes my faith in the very core of humanity.

I was under the impression it was a Hitchhiker reference but since I never bothered to read that book I figured I'd ask.

Given the response, I have all the confirmation I need for my suspicion. :rolleyes2:

If you haven't read the book, you are unfit to call yourself a computer nerd.

I haven't read it. In fact, I'm not a computer nerd, either. I know nothing about computers. Also, I've never seen a single episode of Star Trek either.

I'm okay with that. I kinda like doing that sorta work but it not being obvious to folks I meet. I don't call myself that and only Mrs. Me calls me a nerd...and conditional upon what she's calling me for, she can call me whatever she likes.

I'm entirely good with not being an obvious nerd. I make "nerdcognito" look good.

I go balls deep...I just don't take a screaming running start at it. It can throw off yer aim and lead to "unfortunate placement" accidents.
