vb.net 2008/mysql application

Posted 16 December 2010 - 04:31 PM

hello All,
i am about develop an application and i want to do the following.
1. use vb.net 2008 for the application
2. use mysql database as the database for the application

Question:

1. is it possible to package the application by adding the mysql database
so that during deployment it will be installed as well
eg. vb.net 2008 and access database can be attached and deployed without installing any file to support the access due to its dll files attached
any ideas

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

I don't think you'll be able to do it like with Access databases since MySQL is server-based (i.e. you have to install the server software before you can use a database). You might be able to include a MySQL installer that can install the db software, then have an initialization function that contains the SQL necessary to create the database from scratch.

You might also check out SQLite to see if that might work. I haven't used it, but I do see a lot of programs with sqlite.dll, and their website talks about it being an embedded database engine.

MySQL may have an embedded version, but the page I was looking at indicated that it requires special licensing.

If you have a MySql database installed on a server, your application could login it. You need to import MySql.Data.MySqlClient for your form would be the only requirement I know of.

As far as attaching it to the app, no way that I know.
