Ruby development doesn't need so much IDE, so you can try vim or emacs if you have time.
If your looking for free alternative to Textmate you can try Redcar. It's jruby based, it's still in rapid development, it supports Textmate bundles and themes and it's easy to extemd. Otherwise Netbeans or Aptana Studio.

Not sure if we have a policy on necroposting, but its rather relevant and there's so little ruby traffic that this topic is still on page 1.
Anybody who's read this thread and is thinking about using Netbeans for Ruby development should see this thread.

Currently using RadRails, but I hate it. :( Virtually NO code completion.

I'm weening myself off of code completion. Its nice, but I find that there's too many times I've been lost without it.

It's very stupid in my honest opinion.

For example, I had to ask online if there was a way to capture user input as a number instead of a string.

gets.chomp.to_i

So I had to wait until someone responded my question, and then continue coding and learning. Which is bullshit! :\

I've dumped RadRails entirely and am using the 30 day trial of Rubymine for linux. It has much faster code completion, but still a bit lacking. It doesn't tell me what the method does. Now, that may be a Ruby standard, I'm not sure.

I'm certainly feeling the lack of an 'msdn' for Ruby and intellisense.

Slight update on that, and not sure how active it'll be, but the people working on the JRuby project are looking to take up the ruby plugin for NetBeans... see this thread.

Color me dumb if I'm wrong, but why can't I find the gets class there?

As in:

gets.chomp.to_i

Nvm, found it.

Glad this was posted, actually. I'm laptop shopping this weekend and I think i've been talked into buying a macbook pro. never in my dev career had i ever considered a mac until i stated working with rails. been using some linux flavor for about 8 years now to code and I'm a little nervous about this decision.

So i've been using my spankin' new macbook pro for a week now and i have to say 2 things:

a) it's a fucking AMAZING piece of machinary
B) rubymine is the best rails IDE. It's free if you can prove its project work, or just $70 for one license. TOTALLY worth it
