Posting on eBay

Posted 02 January 2011 - 03:22 PM

I'm trying to post the following code on eBay. When I do it strips the background and the CSS formating. I only know the basics of HTML and am relying on DreamWeavers design feature.

It looks fine when I open the html file or when I post it to the internet and then open it. But as far as I know, eBay doesn't support frame redirects so I can't just point eBay to the page. I have to copy and paste the code into eBay, and when I do that, I have problems.

Thanks in advance!

Why is it every time I come to the HTML & CSS forum everyone is using tables? DON'T USE TABLES!!!! That's not just directed at you. I don't know about anyone else here but, I'm not going to help you unless you get rid of the tables.

Why did I use tables? I found a template online, then made a few simple modifications. Tables are quick and easy, and work most of the time. If you want to redesign my template, and have it look the same, go right ahead. I don't think the tables are my problem, however.

I can understand your frustration with tables, and if you try to do anything complicated, they fail. But I'm not trying to do anything complicated

What EnvXOwner was trying to say is that tables are considered obsolete for a number of reasons such as cross browser rendering problems and slow loading. You are using tables because you are using Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver uses tables to control layout, and is a reason why many developers don't like Dreamweaver. One reason you may be having problems with your layout is that you are using tables rather than DIV tags. If you have a link to the page, post the link and we can see if the page works outside of your environment and eBay.

Tables are not to be used for layout purposes tables were created for organizing and displaying data and so many people new to WebDesign/development think they are a great tool for layouts and such they are not. Tables are unnecessary code and just clog up your file.

His reply was a little harsh but you should consider learning about the <div> tag or the <section> , <header> , <aside> etc. tags... they are used for layout purposes and positioning, not tables

Thanks for your responses. I'm looking forward to taking classes at my college to learn how to do web design correctly, but until then I just to get a template the works.

The first screen shot is what it looks like when I just open it in Safari, through my own web host. The second is what it looks like in eBay. Sorry, I can't provide you a link to the ebay item because I don't want to list it looking like that.

Just a note on the eBay screen shot, the text is there, it's just black and therefore impossible to see.

And I apologize for being harsh, it's just tough when you sink hours into a template that's look fine and works great until you put it into eBay.

You mentioned DreamWeaver being outdated. What program would you recommend? I just need something basic for now, but would like to get into more complicated stuff. I'm willing to spend the money on something good.

Thanks!

You say you are using Safari, does that mean you are using a Mac? I don't know a lot of software for the Mac. If you use Windows Visual Web Developer 2008 Express is a good free program, there is also 2010 but it requires more software to work.

That's okay. I would reccomend Aptana Studio. I will look at the problem you're having. It's just going to be harder.

Yes, sorry I forgot to mention I'm on a mac, though I am having the same issues on my PC.

I use Google Chrome, Apple's Safari and Mozilla Firefox. All have PC and Mac verisons.

The trick is finding a google web design program for Apple's wondrous system. ;-)

The problem is you're looking for a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor like DreamWeaver. Not sure what you mean by Google Web Design program... There are plenty of good editors coders can use on a Mac (I'm a Mac user myself) but if you want to code stuff, you're not going to want to rely on a WYSIWYG editor. You'll want to actually learn how to properly code, especially for basics like HTML and CSS.

As for something good, a good text editor is more than enough if you know what you're doing. Textmate comes to mind if you want a cheap solution. It's not free but it's not godly expensive either and is well recommended in the Mac community. There is a 30-day trial for you to test it out to see if you like it. If you want something a little more robust, check out Coda. Again, not free, but not overly expensive either.

I think I figured it out. eBay will only read what's in the body, and the CSS code goes in the head. Can anyone help me adapt this so I can get the same page look with out having any code in the head? Thanks!
