Hotter job market: Java or C++

Posted 13 January 2011 - 11:50 AM

I did not know where else to ask this, I didn't want a bias answer. Was just curious, I really enjoy C++, but I have also learned Java in college. (equal amount of classes; Java I/II, C++ I/II). Question: is one in more demand than the other? I know that the job market for web coders (i.e. web sites, cell phone apps., and many others) is in pretty high demand all over the US for the most part. Is Java a better language to go after coding wise than C++.(no work experience in either yet..) And, yes I know that location plays the #1 factor in this answer, just looking for an "over all" general answer. (I will also have PHP, MySQL, ASP.Net this last semester so that makes me wonder, do I have more to offer with Java/internet/web than I do C++) I also realize that the understanding of one over the other is a huge factor. Again, just looking for the over all general input on opportunity. Thanks for all input :)

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 2

I think HTML5 will only increase the demand for web developers even more.

Although I do agree that Java is probably in more demand, which is probably why more of the schools are starting to teach Java instead.

I think you should be aware of the languages in demand. Awareness is key, but you should be able to pick up any language easily. In school, they teach you a programming language. But your learning doesn't stop there. You will learn many more languages on your own.

They are both top of the pack, it all depends on the type of programming you want to do for a career.

Games? Device drivers? C++ is what you want to focus on.

Client\web applications? Java is the one for you.

Thanks coders for all your advice and general interest. I have decided that this Associate degree without a intern or any prof. experience is not getting me anywhere..just to jump straight into earning my BS. So I have decided to take the software engineering (seeing that I enjoy C++ the most). I could not land anything with AS degree, and everyone around my area wanted ASP.NET/PHP and such. Not that that is a bad language..just not for my liking. -> So as it turns out, I have eventually answered my own question. But again, thank you all for all your input and advice.
