Vector Graphics Editor

Posted 14 January 2011 - 08:59 AM

As part of my work I'm having to prepare increasingly more documents in different formats. I need to write papers, design posters and give presentations.

And they all need lots of diagrams.

I'd like to be able use the same diagrams in all of them but raster formats can be problematic. Up until now, the best solution has been to draw things using the shapes in Word or Open Office, export as PDF and then clip the file. That's hardly an ideal solution!

So, I'm looking for something to edit vector formats. If it helps, I use LaTeX for my papers and Open Office for most other things. Most importantly, I'd like it to produce files that work nicely with LaTeX.

(Please don't recommend Xfig. I know it's pretty standard for working with LaTeX but it's also pretty nasty.)

I've heard that inkscape is a really good vector graphics editor that also has a LaTeX output option.

That looks rather sexy. Thanks!

Though I have to sat I did look at the screenshot page and think I'll never produce anything of that quality, no matter my tools!

No problem! May I just ask a question: How did you get "Cabbage" under your avatar?

I think I was able to edit it after I was promoted to Expert.
