C# 4.0 How-To - more of a recipe book for C# developers rather than a guide - saves a lot of time when you need to quickly solve a problem and have no idea how.

Murach books are really good as a primer.

The left side of the book is always a more in depth explanation and the right side is usually code with a quick summary of what was described on the left side.

Visual C# 2010: Step by Step
I really enjoyed that book when I first started it I would highly recommend it.

Greetings, all. I am somewhat new to programming so of course the plethora of books available can be overwhelming at times. I bought several books on c# and have come to find that the book that my actual C# programming class (which starts next week) has been very beneficial for me.

The book is Visual C# 2008: How To Program

It goes over a lot of the concepts of object oriented programming while also teaching you the basics of C#. For me that helps me learn the best. Some people prefer them separated but it's definitely different strokes for different folks. I am now on chapter 5 so I am about a fifth of the way done with the book. I also like the Case Study that is conducted throughout the entire book. It's completely optional but it gives you a Use Case (Bank ATM) and shows you how to implement the different concepts that you are learning in each chapter to the use case. It also teaches you using UML so it's a little extra bang for your buck. This does go through .NET 3.5 so I may invest in the newer version for Visual C# 2010. I hope that this helps someone. I know that this may not be that enticing for the Advanced Developers but for a newer coder, it may be of some benefit.

Any excellent book recommendations for me, to help me understand WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) \ XAML.
Every time I try to understand it, I just can't seem to get it. (it's frustrating, as all good stuff seems to use it.)

It can in either VB.Net or C# I know both.

WPF unleashed is by far the most recommended WPF I find
If you have already, get that one for sure.

If you prefer reading for free online to reading paper, CodeProject and StackOverflow will give you C# solutions to most real world problems, and the MSDN online documentation is great for reference.

I recently picked up Pro C# 2010 and the .NET 4 Platform and it's quite the tome. Good coverage from beginning stuff to advanced, and a huge index.

I just do not want to make a thread that may be very similar to this so please tell me if my post is a complete off topic.
Anyways, I am a total beginner, with no experience of programming. I have a passion for games so I am totally interested in game development and would like to join the gaming industry. If I see myself as a talented programmer, I would consider programming as a career. Do you have the recommended C# books for a total beginner like me? Like 'Hello World'

I just want to start with C# first then XNA. These books that you guys recommended require a little more knowledge, and I am not good at choosing a suitable book.

Head First is supposed to be really good.

Wel also have the Learning C# Series. I even made a video for the Hello World one.

Thanks! I will take a look at your "Hello World" video.

The first Head First edition you just recommended uses Visual Basic 8, but there is the second edition that uses Visual Basic 10. I will go with the second edition.

Do you have any tips for a total beginner?
