The Power of Social Networks

Posted 28 January 2011 - 10:14 PM

I really dont believe that events like happened in Tunisia and the uprising in Egypt that's happening as I type this could have happened without the Blogoshpere and Social Networks.

Here is a link that summarizes and shows the call for the demonstrations:

Change Your Life

These posts, without censorship, give the youth, especially, a rally cry and a time to achieve. It snowballs. The world changes just like that.

If Egypt goes, who is next? This could be the States in a few months or years..

How much impact do you think Social Networks or Blogs have had on all these events?

on a side note..you're on my mind Mosty..I hope you are safe :)

I've merged the related threads. :)

@absynthe: The reason social networks and the internet are having such a big effect is b/c they are so accessible in general. Historically, any form of media can be used. Martin Luther's 95 theses went viral, and this was in a time when not many people could read. Even if Egypt can/does take away electronic forms of communication, there will be print communication to take the place with the same messages. It's the content more than the medium that matters.

It's pretty fucking insane when these kids that are part of an anti-government group are being jailed and tortured.

I'm confused. Why did Egypt cut off all communications again?

How is it insane? Egypt is essentially ruled by a dictatorship. The president has his own protective military force that resides outside the realm of the Egyptian army. SHIT IS BAD.

To control the uprising.

Hosny Mubarak has been ruling for about 30 years, many many people are opposing his regime including myself. since he started ruling there has been a lot of corruption in the country and the people haven't seen many political and economical reforms. Many people here don't have proper or no housing, education, jobs, wages are very low, etc. Also people want their freedom of expression and the right to oppose the government without being arrested and tortured. People also want democracy, every time its time for the elections, the elections are forged and pro mubarak people win and that's been happening for 30 years. The people got fed up and aren't going to take it anymore, and these protesters aren't getting calm down until mubarak leaves.

Thank you Jack, I actually left the country to visit my father 10 days before the protests started, good timing I guess. I am supposed to go back to Cairo on the 4th of feb though. Things are getting bigger and bigger over there as I can see on the news, hopefully the president will leave the country soon and so all this can come to an end.
