My text based RPG (Browser)

Posted 29 January 2011 - 11:06 AM

Okay I just wanted to show a text-based RPG I've been working on. Right now you can't test it because I have added making accounts possible not characters yet. Anyway here are some screenshots though. Tell me what you think.

It's the 80s all over again! :bananaman:
Anyway how did you do it? I'm working on the same thing, only mine has no graphics yet.

I have done:
-simple battle function
-choose class function

that's it.

Using Javascript by the way. Will tune in on your project. ^^

All you are using is Javascript? Have you selected a type of Database you are going to use yet or a Server-side scripting language? Anyway this game I have been working for a year about now. I know that is kinda sad, but I have been real busy. And I went 3 or 4 months without doing anything on it.

Yep, Javascript. I'm that type of guy that codes everything and checks everything is working before implementing database stuff. What did you use there dude? Game programming should be taken at your own pace so that you won't tire of the project and chuck it at the trash bin! ^_^

Well I used ASP and Access. And obviously some HTML and CSS. I only used a very little bit of javascript.

To tell you the truth, I don't know how to code in ASP. I want to try but I don't know what I need to download. What should I use? Oh, and isn't ASP drag and drop? Or not?

First of all you have to use IIS. If you have Vista Home Premium or higher you already have IIS. And no ASP is not drag and drop it is complete code.

It is all code? Maybe what I'm referring to is ASP.NET, is it drag and drop? Because the project of my classmate was made by ASP and he told me it was drag and drop. I am using Windows XP Professional SP3, and I think IIS is installed, because when I type localhost when I installed XAMPP IIS is the page that appears.

Anyway what is your inspiration in doing the project? I think what you're doing is like "The Kingdom Of Loathing". Do you play that? ^^

Actually I was inspired to do it by another game. And I just found the Kingdom of Loathing about a month ago. ASP.NET is also code but there might have been a certain software your friend found that would write the code for you after you used a drag and drop system. And you clearly do have IIS then.

What game is it? Could you point me in a direction on how I can start coding with ASP? I would like to try it. How can I integrate ASP in Visual Studio?

What other games have you done?

I tried some programming in Actionscript and Flash but never went very far with it. If you would like to start programming in ASP. Read this tutorial. This tutorial even has how to start out with IIS in it all the way too programming with databases which is what you would mainly need to do.

It works dude! What is the advantage of ASP over Javascript? Yeah it's hard to do Flash especially for me, I think working with Flash needs a bit of creativity.

Well for one ASP can access databases but Javascript can't.

As far as I know you can also use database with Javascript... with the help of PHP that is. What database does ASP support? If it supports SQL then I would like to try my hand at it because I want to learn that too. Two birds with one stone and all that. Anyway, what's the progress with the game? :)
