Dealing with large bg images

Posted 08 February 2011 - 10:39 AM

Hi - I've got a customer who designs websites in as a graphic designer and likes large, variegated backgrounds (I've loaded a graphic of the basic site layout). I'm curious if there is a technique that can help minimize the file size of these images (other than optimizing them for web, of course). One thing I'm thinking about is breaking them by up into four images that fit around the main content so that I am not wasting bandwidth on the part of the bg you don't see. But then, that involves four server calls rather than one, and I wonder if I really gain anything. Appreciate any thoughts!

I've used these methods on various templates for people. They work nicely when they want minimal bandwidth usage and low costs.
