How do they make them nowadays?

Posted 11 February 2011 - 07:58 PM

I'm not so sure about how they made games for old consoles like Atari and SNES, but I'm guessing they used a programming language and then implemented them to the hardware (the game system and cartridges). But, how do they make today's games?

I really would like to know if Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony use an specific programming language(s) or if they use some form of GUI (I'm guessing something similar to Game Maker) to create the games.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Back in the age of the Atari - N64, games were primarily made in assembly. Try making a game in pure assembly. It's pure hell.

Nowadays, the major console SDKs probably use the console's maker's implementation of a language/graphics. I've heard around that Nintendo uses their own graphics library, yet somehow still incorporate OpenGL into it. Xbox360 we all know uses C# and XNA to make games. Sony also uses some super secret graphics library for it's games, yet also with Nintendo, still uses OpenGL also.

The console market is a mysterious market for development. If you want to unravel their secrets you have to purchase the console's SDK for yourself.

^ I don't think they are written in assembly as making the legend of zelda in assembly would take a team of 100 programmers forever because half would quit and the cycle would go on like that :P but thats just what i think
