XNA Three Week Challenge

Alright guys, the time has finally come. This will be the official announcement and commencement speech of the monthly XNA Three Week Challenge held here at Dream.In.Code!

Challenge: Blow up some aliens!

Description: Our first challenge is going to be a simple space shooter. I will let each of you decide the perspective of the game. If you want to do a side-scrolling space shooter, that’s fine. If you want to do a more traditional top-down space shooter, that’s also fine. The bottom line is you need to have a player ship that shoots in the direction of enemy ships and blow those things up! In this challenge, I’m not going to require a startup screen. If your game runs and starts directly in the playable screen, that will be fine. No animations are going to be required for this first challenge. I’m starting simple and each challenge will build upon your skills and introduce new features that are required to push each of you to new heights with the XNA Framework. Submissions will be accepted in XNA 3.1 as well as XNA 4.0.

Requirements: The basic requirements for this game will be as follows:
• A pause feature
• Ship sprite to represent the player
• The ability to fire projectiles
• Collision detection to destroy enemies, and the player, if projectiles collide with ships
• A score system that keeps track of a players progress

Bonus: The bonus features that I am going to list here are not requirements for the challenge, but just a few tips of some extra things that you can do if you find time and want to go the extra mile.
• “Health” bar to allow player to take more than one hit
• Animated sprites for ships and/or projectiles
• Menu system at startup
• PowerUps for multiple level projectiles

Again, the things listed in the “Bonus” section are not required, they are just a few little things that you can do to improve your games should you have time.

I will not take points off of a project for artwork or lack thereof. This is a programming challenge, not an art challenge, so as long as your game works and meets all the requirements, you’ve completed the challenge and have a chance to win Gold, Silver or Bronze.

There will be no prizes for these challenges other than bragging rights and the knowledge you gain while taking part.
The challenge begins now! Gather your resources and begin writing your games! You have March 5th to get submissions in. Anything submitted after March 5th will not be accepted.

Forgot to mention that all submissions need to be in the form of a .zip or a .rar file that contains the entire solution, including full source code and any and all art assets. If I can't build your project due to missing art assets, then I can't judge it.

hahah You're more than welcome to do it in C++ if you want, but I won't be judging it. If you can do it in C++ you should easily be able to do it in XNA, as it's generally easier than working with C++ and, I'm assuming SDL for a simple 2d project like this.

Are we allowed to use a game engine, such as FlatRedBall? If not, it would really be a challenge for me. Otherwise I could make that in a short time easy.

I'm going to have to say no engines allowed on this one. As a game like I've described is one of the most simplistic games that anyone could do in XNA, I want to see an understanding of the XNA Framework itself, rather than a game built on top of someone else's work. Like I said in the description, it doesn't have to be incredibly fancy or anything, I just want to see a working game that shows that the person who built it has a solid understanding of the most basic features of the framework. Each of my challenges are going to get slightly more challenging than the last and I feel that using an engine to make the process easier would cheapen the entire experience.

Are you going to be using an XBOX pad or just a keyboard for judging?

I no longer own an XBOX, and I also made the mistake of selling my wired controller with the XBOX, so I will only be using a keyboard for judging. You're welcome to put functionality in for each input type, but it's not required.
