I have an HTC Desire, got it shortly after it came out. I love it, and finally got around to rooting last night and flashing a custom ROM (MIUI)
Will probably post some screenies when I've finished setting it up.
Benchmark is quite surprising.

There's the Android NDK but it can only be used in conjunction with the SDK (ie, you still need some Java knowledge)
Never used the NDK so can't really say too much about it. Doesn't look like a tool for full app development though, and I'm too lazy to read past the first paragraph.

Android is great, though I am a blackberry user.
@olibenu, if you have experience with C++ then you will understand Java very quickly. It is easier and does not have things such as pointers, but it is still very good.
@gabehabe, LOL!!!

HTC Hero. Had it two years. Love it to pieces. Except more recently it's gotten a little mind of it's own in that little ARM7 of his....
However...
*braces for beating*
Because I'm so amazing with C# and Silverlight...
I'm buying an HTC 7 Pro on Windows Phone 7
*Cowers*
Please don't kill me
WinPhone is in it's infancy, and I for one think it's going to be brilliant as soon as it develops into a fully fledged iPhone beater, like Android is doing.

Picked up the Droid X when it came out and have rooted it recently and I am now enjoying the phone a lot more.
Crazy thing is with these phones they are starting to follow computers in the sense that you buy the latest and greatest and in 1-2 months your phone is obsolete because something better is already out.
I'm curious to see if and LTE Iphone comes out on Verizon this summer and what other Android phones they will release.

The LG Optimus 3D is an example of this, however it doesn't render any phones obsolete because it itself is redundant due to the uselessness of it's primary features.
Oh and computers, they generally run a 6 month cycle I've noticed, and it also seems to rely heavily on the GPU vendors: i.e, new computers are released when newer GPU/CPU's are, and laptops always seem to stay one generation behind...
I wanted to root my Hero, 'cause I'm thinking a clean version of 2.2 or 2.3 might speed it up a little - with all the little optimizations...

When I rooted it I did a full backup and restore of text messages. Turns out I had 11,000 and the restore has crashed my phone. Fail.
