Every year about this time, Craig Mundie, Microsoft’s chief research and strategy officer, holds an intimate gathering to discuss the company’s vision for the future: just Craig, a handful of Microsoft thinkers and select media convening for a lively show-and-tell discussion called TechForum.

Anyone else (who owns or plans to own a Kinect) but me excited about this?

I was planning on buying one (though have no xbox) till I found out Microsoft were against the use of it on PC. If this SDK turns out to be any good, I might well get one. I expect it will not be open source?

im very pumped about this. ive been fooling with the hacks but im really looking forward to getting some official support. I doubt it will support vb AND c# but i guess this will give me a good reason to finally dig into c# more thoroughly.

@Shane Microsoft has nothing against the use of Kinect on PC - in fact, if you search for Kinect hacks, most of them are actually made on a PC.

@bflosabre91 I would assume that initially it will be released for C++ only (the unamanged version) due to the massive amount of direct hardware interactions (same as other Windows SDK releases). But who knows.

heres a quote i found in an article that made me think it would be c# at the very least.

Quote

Microsoft announced that a software development kit for the Kinect will be coming this spring. What's interesting, though is that the kit will be releasing to the public to "meet the needs of higher-level people who don't care how the camera works."

Oh right... the day after that weekend where somebody made the first drivers, I saw loads of articles saying Microsoft was against it. Obviously did not read them properly (or they were fake).

Might have to see if I can pick one up cheap then :)

It's all good as long as developers don't tamper with the hardware internals.

I wonder, do you think it would be possible to make a javascript wrapper for Kinect? Similar to jQTouch for iOS.

Shane: I believe that has been done already:

I think THAT is what MS was freaking about.

Ooo thanks! I meant more of web apps using motion tracking rather than just navigation, but still a great step forward (albeit from November) :)

If it is released with support for C++ I will probably pick one up. So many awesome things could be done with it.
