As the title says, here's a nice diagram made by an experience software developer to help people decide what to learn next.

Thought I'd share :)

Any thoughts?

That's an awesome chart. I'm sure a lot of people will have plenty to say negatively about it, but I think it's a decent enough chart to point out some of the more obvious advantages/uses for languages.

If there's one thing I've learnt from my short time being a programmer, it's that there is always someone that will disagree :)

Now that I think about it, I guess that applies to life in general.

Kind of gets the point across. It would be easier to follow if it was actually a flowchart.

Wow! I see ruby/rails are beginning to gain a lot of grounds in the programming world of late.

Nice informative chart.

Simplistic and one-dimensional in its conclusions. There's your negative. but true, comment. :)

Very nice, I'm so eager on starting to learn Android!! Looks like that could also apply if you in it for the money and job security, Android and mobile development in general is starting to really go through the roof.

I started with PHP doing web, and I like it, so I may go to Ruby next. I've heard some good things about it and it's a great way to stay in shape.

Agreed.

The diagram is silly at best. It lists two languages, Objective-C and Java, under mobile development when, in fact, most all of the JVM languages work on Android. Besides that, just look at the question it's asking. "Do you like Microsoft?" for C#, "Do you like Google?" for Go, "You don't mind brackets?" for Clojure, and "Apple fan?" for Objective-C. It's obvious that the creator isn't familiar enough with all of those languages to make a meaningful diagram.

However, I'm not sure how serious the diagram was meant to be. I'm hoping for not very serious. This sort of thing is extremely subjective by nature.

Odd little list. They're reasonable, if narrow, choices. Author has a thing for ruby. Sorry, ruby doesn't equal web. Rails does, but I wouldn't recommend it for all cases.

I thought the "something familiar"==Groovy particularly weird. Familiar to who? Groovy on Grails is kind of fun; I guess that would cut into the ruby share. :P

I wouldn't recommend it to anybody actually looking for a new language - better to list all the languages this chart has and tell them to google it.

This should not be taken seriously in my opinion, but it is a fairly nice (though very simplistic) diagram. I was very surprised to see languages other than Java and C#!

Hmm... found the original link: http://www.streamhea...-to-learn-next/

The author says they wrote it after reading Seven Languages in Seven Weeks. I actually suspected this when I saw Io. If Prolog had been on the list, I would have been certain. Neat book, btw.

I did a search looking for a serious flowchart. Alas, nada.
