Do you ART?

Posted 01 March 2011 - 05:37 PM

Was just wondering how many of the coders on this site are also artists in some respect outside of a professional capacity (painting, drawing, music, sculpting, etc).

It doesn't seem like there would need to be any sort of link between coding and creating art, but it is there, at least in my experience. All of my friends who code are artists - one is even the front man of a relatively successful local punk rock band.

As for myself, I code, I draw, I paint, I do photography and digital artwork - like programming languages, I have different levels of success with each. I do so simply out of a desire to create something; it seldom matters to me in what form I'm creating it. If you took away my computers, my paints, my pens and pencils, my camera, I'd probably start sculpting my mashed potatoes.

So how bout it: Do you art, and how do you art?

I love to work with music. I recently finished my first composition ever and gave it life with Garageband. I wish I was good at drawing, but every attempt I made sucked, so I am thinkin in trying 3D art some day.

im a decent drawer but not professional. i like to think of my self as a really hard core doodler. i have stacks of notebooks full of doodles. i get my notebooks taken away so much by my teachers that i just keep like 4 so i can keep doodling in the next class. if i have a particularly bad teacher funny comics will tend fill the note books with them featured as the main charter.

I'm a musician, graphic artist, and a coder. Graphic artistry skills are pretty much essential in web site creation though.

I've been working with 3d art. Can't sell it or anything (the process isn't exactly legal).

I am a musician (voice, piano, clarinet and guitar) and a cartoonist. I suck horribly at digital art, however. :(

I art. Mostly, I program, I consider that art, especially if you can make it elegant. There are an infinite number of ways to accomplish something afterall, I just look for a pretty one :)

Outside of programming, I do digital artwork (forum signatures, icons, and website skins mostly), I have done photography in the past, but time gets to be an issue there. I also used to play the guitar (haven't had time in a few years now T_T). I have tried drawing, but I am not pleased with my skill so I typically stay away from it (I can think things up, but can't get them on paper without torturing them horribly).

im not super creative with drawing; i draw what i see, how i see it. in art class i get to draw really big things, the only thing better than having an hour to draw during the school day is an hour to program :)

I'd like to think of myself as a deicent drawer, painter (only abstract though), I tried digital art, but working with a wacom tablet takes some serious getting used to. And I also play the guitar. I don't get much time for all of this though with studying and all that. But it's nice if I do get some free time here and there.

@ishkabible - Scan in and show us some of your doodles man, would love to see! Everyone should show some of their work... :frenchy:

I play the Bagpipes. I've played at funerals before, though it's not my favorite thing to do.

I don't know if you can consider it art, but here we go :)
So, because i suck at drawing, and i get kinda bored at some classes, i invented a way to draw (well, i guess i'm not the inventor, but i have never heard of it before :P ) .So, you get a white piece of paper, close your eyes and make random points. Then you connect those points, in any way you like. Then you look at the drawing, and if you can imagine a human face out of it, you make the rest of the lines, some shades, and there you go.Then, if in the person's head you have wobbly lines, you can use it as half of a pine tree, and so on.It's not really drawing, it's more imagination practice...But you can make nice things if you're bored enough :)

I draw when I can find the time. Also, I am a graphic artist. It is essential for building websites and such. I tend to draw things on my tablet every now and then as well just to kill time sometimes. Graphic design was my first love with computers, even before programming. Now, I do both and I love it. I also make sprites and such for my games that I make on the side.
