Deus Ex - Probably my favorite game now. Ever.

Posted 03 March 2011 - 09:18 PM

There's hype surrounding this game all over the internet but I never gave it a chance. Last night I bought it on Steam and I was blown away.

The game is just unlike any other. You have choices - and not Peter Molyneux choices, I'm talking real choices that affect the way you play the game.

Do you have lockpicking abilities? Pick that hatch on the roof and go in stealth.
Do you have strong shooting skills? Just walk right in and Doom 2 the place.
Angry? Grab a crowbar and hulk smash everything.

Choice is yours.

For a game this old I was really blown away by the voice acting and overall polish the game has. I do not own a top of the line laptop, so I guess this is why I'm playing the backlog of games ;) but I think I'm coming out winning by experiencing these phenomenal titles. Every character so far is unique and hard to forget, from the latino doctor, to the broken german mecha, it's just quality all around.

I tried it a long time ago and didn't really care for it, but it was too long ago to go into details about why.

It was a great game when it came out. A lot of that stuff is common in games now though. Still, for a legacy game it's great.

If you're on a game backlog, start with the Thief series, then work through Ngame (yes, the flash game), and then maybe take a spin through the original unreal.

Edit: forgot to mention Myth (not Myst) and Myth 2: Soulblighter, and maybe Oni as well, which is what all the Ninja Gaiden/ Devil May Cry games try to be. It would be the best game ever if it were multiplayer, lets put it that way.

System Shock 2 comes to mind. Good combo of FPS, with a little RPG, and impressively creepy. Precursor to BioShock.

Honestly, when it comes to FPS, play is worth more than graphics. Give me something to blow away and make it fast. On the other side, sneaking around in fun too. Thief is a must. Also, Splinter Cell.

My all time favorite FPS is probably Max Pain. :P Mostly simple, with pretensions of Detective Nior.

i never played system shock 2 but i know it laid the groundwork for how awesome bioshock was, and therefore it gets my seal of approval based on that alone.

Deus Ex release day: June 22, 2000
System Shock 2 release day: August 11, 1999

Made by some of the same team memebers. Heralded as one of the greatest games ever to grace a screen.

Seems I'm going to have a looooooong weekend. hehe. :D

I love Deus Ex. I've played it multiple times, and I still play it today sometimes. I love what you can do like you said, in terms of how you want to complete the missions. :)
