So having just got my new laptop up and running, and getting certain bits of software that I just can not live with out (VLC, Spotify, Drop box etc.), it got me thinking about other pieces of software I once thought I would not be able to live with out.
So this topic is mainly just a question about what software you just couldn't live without on your laptop? Has that stayed the same since your first laptop or have certain pieces of software fallen by the wayside?

Visual Studio 2010, Steam, Paint.NET
Those three are my three biggies.
Also fuck you Adobe for installing all sorts of shit on my machine when I only need the pdf reader.

Chrome, Notepad++, Steam, and TeamSpeak are the main applications I use daily.

I know what I can do with out - these new fangled graphic overlays for my command prompt. All unicorns and flowers gussying up my blinking cursor. One might even call them a "graphical user interface". Ugh.
I miss my DOS 6.2. An my donkey.
Edit:
Visual Studios
Steam
winamp
Daemon tools lite
XAMPP

VMware.
I keep the actual host OS as clean as can be.
Then day-to-day OS is actually a Virtual Machine.
It gives a lot more security plus the ability to take snapshots. I love snapshots. That way you can truly roll back when something catastrophic happens.
My Virtual Machine is stored on a USB drive. So I can boot the same Virtual Machine from my desktop, my laptop or any other computer with VMware player (free) and still have *my* computer.

Just about any software that plays music. Have tried many of them and haven't settled on a favorite yet.

I'd rip my hair out pretty much every day without Everything (the file search tool). My other must-have applications are:
IDM
TrueCrypt
VLC
Chrome
Firefox
Tor
VS2010 Ultimate
.NET Reflector

for windows:
chrome, opera, Firefox, outlook express or thunderbird, notepad++, everything (yes, the name of the program is 'everything'), ultramon, visual studio 2008 and 2010, netbeans, paint.net, foxit PDF, and either stardock or sTabLauncher.
for Fedora:
Mono, Gimp, Firefox, eclipse... not that much, really. mostly the linux environments already have what I want to use installed and ready to go.

A programming language.
I am not particularly picky which one -- but I HATE HATE HATE a computer I can't program. Even just a nice little scripting language will let me live.

Lynx browser. I don't know what I would do without it.

I'm curious - in the year 2011, why in the world would you want to use Lynx? Honest question, what use can you give it when 75+% of all sites have images and interactive content.
