An Awesome Sci Fi

Posted 05 March 2011 - 03:49 PM

The Fifth Element

God I wish you guys could come up with something nice for me to watch tonight. I'm kind of in the mood for a Sci Fi but it doesn't matter I suppose. Just watched this and was impressed again. Find me something I'll like. Just something that is done well...not shit. Any recommendations?

Firefly is awesome, you'll get sucked into it for sure. But it's a series so expect to lose a lot of hours.

As for anything else, I'm not sure what to suggest. You say Sci-Fi, but you also reference "Fifth Element". This suggests to me that you have no concern for 'when' the movie was made. And well the sci-fi genre in general is humongous! Sooo, it could take a long time to list all of them off, of which a large selection you may not enjoy. For instance I love Sci-Fi, yet I despise the most profited sci-fi series "Star Wars". I could easily list of 30 sci-fi films you probably wouldn't enjoy.

So in that vein, I'll just list a few of my favs (and I love 'Fifth Element', the albino of my pet hedgehogs is named after Leeloo).

Sunshine - Danny Boyle doing his thing... in space.
Alien - well duuuuuhhhhhh
Blade Runner - another Ridley Scott
Waterworld - cause I'm a fag for this movie, and it's hated on so much, so I have to suggest it in hopes that someone might realize this movie is actually really fun
The Lost Room - AWESOME mini-series that aired on sci-fi, watch this shit... like seriously, watch it!
Moon - recent sci-fi psycho-suspense film. I really enjoyed it a lot.
Pitch Black - I avoided this film for 5 years thinking it would suck... it actually didn't.

Though I tend to actually lean more fantastical sci-fi and dystopian future.

Mad Max
Postman
A Boy and his Dog
City of Lost Children
Delicatesen

that sort

Moon and Blade Runner were fucking terrible.

Firefly
Pitch Black
Chronicles of Riddick
Fifth Element
Futurama (that counts right?)
Serenity
The Matrix
Soylent Green (haven't personally seen it, but I hear good things)
Aeon Flux
Ultraviolet
The Butterfly Effect
Hollow Man (lawwwwl)
Gamer (if not for sci fi, but an excuse to see Michael C Hall)

YES!!! This is awesome! I've seen alot of those that you guys have recommended (all of KYA's except Gamer, Soylent Green, The Butterfly Effect was awesome). I'm looking up Lex and "the lost room" now :) Keep on putting them up! They dont have to be SCI FI, I just want a really good movie that is memorable for its awesomeness. :) Something for the mind, ya know? Something to think about?

Winning with Tigerblood :)

Lex reminds me of Dr Who for some reason :) Looks ok!

The Lost Room looks pretty damn cool too! From back in 2006! That doesnt matter though I just want something that was well made and is considered a good series or movie (whatever). Firefly and Serenity kicks ass :) I liked it alot! But again, doesn't matter what genre

First, I really do like The Fifth Element. I'm not sure there's anything close to action, comic, fantasy combo. Brazil? Still not quite. Trying to think of what I'd pick to scratch that itch...

Surrogates. More Bruce. Surprisingly good.

Tank Girl. I don't know why, but I've been thinking about watching this again. I can't actually call it good, but perhaps bad in a good way?

Freejack. With Chuck in the news so much, I've been thinking about his brother's scifi offering. More cyberpunky than anything else. Drastically different from the short story, which was also good.

I, Robot. For the action, special effects itch.

Children of Men. Probably the best speculative fiction offering in the last decade.

Daybreakers. Future vampires, but surprisingly good.

The Ice Pirates. Silly, fun, you can watch this one over and over.

I'll stop now...

Awesome! After Luc Besson, probably the only other French writer/directors I'll go out of my way to track down.

Baav I've seen em all but Brazil. Is it good???

I loved "Children of Men". It is a whole different type of direction of movies. When you watch it you feel like you're in the movie. The cinematography was amazing!!

It's a little trippy, actually. Terry Gilliam, unleashed. Anything by the post Monty Terry is probably good, Time Bandits is a must. Twelve Monkeys, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Odd combos of humorously surreal and existential angst.

I should throw in, one of the best movies no one has ever seen: Fallen. Demons and Denzel. Zero effects. It will stick with you.

The only Terry Gilliam film I don't like is 'fear and loathing'... but Brazil is really out there, it's probably his most out there... and yep I've seen Tideland. Speaking of Tideland, see that as well. Shit if it has the Terry Gilliam name on it, watch it... THE BARON MUNCHAUSEN!

Thinking of time travel movies now...

A truly wonderful, charming, movie is Time after Time.

For the obscure, low budget, scifi, Primer.

Strange, low budget, obscure, noir, almost scifi, Pi. It feels that others have tried to copy this one, but never quite nailed it. The writer / director recently did Black Swan, so you might have an easier time finding this.

Hmmmm...i've heard of Pi. That may be the one :) I haven't seen "Black Swan" but it won an Oscar..well she did.

Quote

'Pi' is independent filmmaking at its best. Without the constraints of the studio/corporate system, Aronofsky and Gullette created a film that is bizarre, intelligent, and unlike anything that came out of Hollywood in the 1990's. Who would have thought to blend Wall Street, the Kabbalah, computer science, Go, number theory, and the most fascinating number in the universe in a solute of obsessive-compulsive, paranoid genius and then strain through gritty B&W cinematography and hyperkinetic editing? The mixture is definitely not for everybody, but I certainly loved it.

Plus the soundtrack (featuring Orbital, Clint Mansell, Aphex Twin. Gus Gus, Spacetime Continuum, and other techno talents) just flat-out rocks.

Yep...it may be hard to change my mind on this one :) Looks awesome!
