any major language is fine for a beginner.

I think it's good to start with something like Java or C#. Mid-level languages with C-like syntax make learning more challenging than very high level languages like Python, but the challenge is mostly a result of learning the object-oriented paradigm on top of basic program control structures.

I actually started out with Spectrum BASIC back in the late 80s, before moving on to a little html design. It wasn't though till I got into programming and learned hexidecimal programming of microprocessors and assembly, I gained a true appreciation of the higher languages.

Professionally I started out with C and C++, went on to Java, Python, Perl and a few others and currently work with C#, T-SQL and jQuery. C# does make a really nice beginners language though in my opinion. Python and Java aren't too bad either. C++ is pretty good for procedural language programming, but I never cared for its use in OOP.
