Build an app that will take two comma seperated lists and will return the intersection of both lists. Do it without the Java collection object. That is a good programming excersize. Now run it on 10,000,000 objects per list. That is REAL programming if you can get it to return in less than a few seconds.

Um. . . I think he's looking for a project to apply a few basic principles and become more accustomed to the language. While your list comparator sounds like fun, I think that's a bit more than he wants to do right now.

Is there anything you're interested in doing? Graphics, or just straight-up algorithms?

One of my first courseworks for fundamental programming principles was fairly easy and fun. Maybe you can try that.

Quote

Write a program that outputs the lyrics to the song “99 Bytes of Bits on the Bus”, which can be sung to the melody of the repetitive song “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall”. The lyrics of this song can be found at the end of this assignment.
Analyze the lyrics of the song. Identify recurring patterns in the lyrics of every verse. Also identify slight variations. Develop an algorithm which makes use of basic control structures, such as sequence, selection and iteration, to efficiently output the lyrics. Implement your algorithm in Java. Test your program and improve it if necessary.
The program should only work for any sensible numbers of bytes to start with, e.g. (obviously) 99 bytes but also 22 bytes or 2 bytes. Negative numbers of bytes are less sensible.
If the initial number of bytes is chosen such that only two bytes are left at the end, change the last verse to:
2 bytes of bits on the bus, 2 bytes of bits. Take them down, short them to ground. No more bytes of bits on the bus.
NB. This verse differs slightly from the one starting with 1 byte.
The program should obtain the number of bytes to start with from the user.
