What has college done for you?
Posted 22 December 2006 - 11:26 AM
For those of us currently attending or completed college, what has those years taught or done for you?
For myself, I've learned a lot about how networks actually work in both the hardware and software areas. But more importantly, I've been forced to interact with people in real life face to face which is something I don't like doing. So I've noticed that I'm more willing to chat with people, even those I may never see again. Heck sometimes I even approach a person to talk, a thing I'd never do before.

it made me get over my sheer hatred of riding the city bus despite being an attempted robbery victim twice. i see everything in terms of quantum physics so i'm just that much more insane, and i'm just as non-talkative as before so... all in all, not much.

(university)
Cost me mega amounts of money, and forced me to learn languages and concepts i never would have learned on my own. I will likely never use any of them in the future, but they were good for my overall knowledge of computers and history of languages.
I'm not sure it is worth the expense, but it is definatly an experience.

Wow. I never thought people around here never talked that much in real life. Imagine that.
I suppose I don't talk that much too. People around me even has to convince me to talk. Let's just say I'd rather not speak if its something that makes no sense.
But luckily, this time around, is complete different. I have learned that I have the skills to lead people. They listen to me. It was really weird at first. Me? A leader? Ha ha!
I also took up CISCO Networking. But I got bored so I dropped the subject. So far, I've been regretting that move. I should've completed it.
I have always been independent so that makes my moves a little out of track at times.

obviously. i'm only in it for physics and big maff, and when i can see lectures for free and get books for free, it feels like a waste.

But come to think of it, academically, I never learned anything. I had programming subjects. But my instructors were so lazy, my classmates and I had to learn on our own.

You know, college must have not done that much for me if I have to think this hard to the point that it makes my head hurt. But Here goes, Along with everyone I would have to say wasted money and a little more knowlege of how Active Directory and networking works. Other than that I learned everything else myself. Oh and I guess college gave me a Degree.

College set me back 2 years in technology. They taught me the wrong way to program and forced me to learn incorrect syntax and created bad coding habits. Very little of what I learned could ever be used in a business environment and if it were to be used, I'd likely lose my job.
I had a wonderful technical writing teacher and learned a lot about the proper way to write technical documents and resumes.
But other than that, it was a joke.
