I'm new to programming. Not new like 'just started' but new like 'never even seen the programming language' I know that you need years of training to be able to program, but I'm a fast learner as I went through web design 1 in 4.5 weeks. Me and a friend are super fans of popular rpg's like pokemon and final fantasy etc. So we wanted to create our own rpg in that genre. We have a basic storyline and use Microsoft paint to create NES and SNES sprites and such. What we want to know is how to put it all together. I want to find a program or online course for free that will teach me. The thing is, I don't even know what kind of programming languages are out there, and which one of them would be best suited for me and is easy to learn. I don't need to learn everything about it, just what I need to know to make this game a success. I tried using programs like game maker 8 and rpg maker but they aren't what I'm looking for. I want the full ability to create in my own environment, not in a set one like game maker. If someone would be as kind enough as to help answer these questions, I would be forever greatful. thank you.

You won't be able to pick up the skills you want in a matter of weeks. It takes a few years and a lot of practice. This thread is probably a good place to start.

i know that it can take years and i have the patience for that. i just need the basics and i want to know which language is easier to pick up and use at the very basic level

Your motivation is good but targeted in the wrong direction. Your skills will not allow you to make a game how you would wish to. What you are looking for doesn't exist.

That is a path that you must travel in doing research. Game development isn't about showing people what they should be doing, they should be researching off their own back and coming back with questions based on that research. Saying things like 'I love games and have been playing them since I was little' is something that I and many other game devs have heard a million times over.

You have been asked to read the link by two people here on the forum and it's clear you haven't bothered. If you can't be bothered to help yourself I certainly am not going to bother to help you make your game.

Don't see why I should spoon feed you or anyone else. No-one spoon fed me!

the first thing i did was try that link. i did not see any programs or online resources to teach me how to use the programming language

Depending on your Operating System, you will use your text editor of choice, & your compiler of choice. If you are developing for a console, then you will need to use a console specific compiler.

We learned by reading books and practising (or at least I did). I didn't use tutorials and ask for help on forums -seriously.

Game development requires you making the effort on your part. Simple as that!

no2pencil was the most helpful out of all the answers. now i know that programming uses a text editor and not a program like dreamweaver for html or css. i am trying to make the game for pc.

no free resources? i meant online as in you can read them online. i already spent enough money on html and css and im not working right now so i dont have ANY money
