Windows 8 (?)

Posted 31 March 2011 - 09:23 AM

Lifehacker just announced that Windows 8 previews are going out.

They also announced that

Quote

A preview build of Windows 8 has gone out to select Microsoft partners, with bits of the "Twin UI" and other updates. Those builds are under seemingly heavy lock and key, but at least one thing has fallen onto the net: the default wallpaper.

A bunch of screen shots and collections of rumors. Let the fun begin, again! Then again the last time I switched my OS it was from XP to Windows7... and I was running on XP for the grip of years. To keep consistent I should hold off until Windows 10 or so.

I wonder if my university will forget that I graduated, granting me access to Windows 8 stuff for free.

I don't even have to do that - there's a site we can log into with isos for all licensed software.

How can you ever have enough windows? Windows 7 and I are like best pals! More so than XP and I ever were! I swear I got to bed singing this song to Windows 7:

Quote

you guys are my best friends
through thick and thin
we always been together
were four of a kind havin
fun all day laugh'n around and
pilen a way just best friends
BEST FRIENDS ARE WE!

i love you guys

That's what someone did to get me access to dreamspark but for only visual studio 2010.
But otherwise I think this is real mainly because it is about the windows life-cycle for the last two versions. The last two versions have been about 2 years give or take and what do you know. We are closing in on two years of Windows 6 being out.

I don't know anything though. Just throwing out my hypothesis.

I'm with the guy who has had enough of windows.

BUT HEY... if they actually make an OS that works right and I don't have to wait forever to do anything then maybe, just maybe, I'll dual boot.

Depends on how you look at it. Vista was released early 2007. Win7 late 2009. I consider Win7 as only a much needed major update for Vista (or Vista a very very early alpha version of Win7), which I rather think Microsoft confirmed when they released Win7 with the official version number of 6.1. (Vista was 6.0) -- I'm sure there is some official rationalization for it, like "compatibility" or some such crap, but... yea, no. Not buying it. - If they don't even think it's worth a new release number...

So by that reasoning we had XP in late 2001 -> Vista early 2007, which is like 5-6 years, and it's now 2011 so I'm thinking/hoping we still have like 1-2 years left until we have to endure another Windows launch.

By the way, Windows XP was also not released under it's own release number.
Just saying.

Virtualization is the way to go. Less time consuming when you stop using it and find a better use for the partition space :)

Those of you who have read or are following leaks and updates on the next version of Windows (presumable windows 8), what are your thoughts so far?
