Re: Windows 8 (?)

Oh boy, lets take up even MORE desktop space with needless ribbons and such. The need for even larger monitors comes with every version. First the simple, small effeective Start menu grew by 500%, now the menus for every Windows Explorer window will waste a lot of real estate.

History Vault a copy of Apple's Time Machine
Resetting the OS to factory default looks like it will be easier/faster.

But I don't know people that use factory default. The first thing I do is format an new PC and re-install the OS without all the bundled shyte. Factory default is about the last thing I want. I run a bare bones host OS and then my actual operating environment is in VMware, where I can take a snapshot and return to it at any time; including return to that state with every new boot. That really keeps it working well.
Can someone with privileges please merge the threads then, please?

I read somewhere that the ribbon leaks were of early UI builds and much has changed (was an official but indirect reply).

I am actually interested in getting the Windows 8 beta (if it comes out for public comsumption) and installing it to a VM, that way even if it attempts to kill everything it can see it will only see a little portion of my harddrive which I can then delete and everything will be better again
It will be cool to see what features they think are needed or cool enough for public release.

Most of the Ribbon UI will be beneficial for tablets as it provides bigger icons for touching and the like. I think that as a large company withe experience they will likely create an amazing product, especially after learnign from prior mistakes.

I don't. I found XP to be cartoony and inconvenient, although the speed and stability once it matured were both excellent.

And how much control does the user actually have over his/her system?
Is it secure?
What are the minimum requirements?
Keep the following in mind when you give me an answer:
I use FreeBSD on ppc and sparc64 systems.
I use Linux+GNU on ppc and x86. I also run projects on these.
I use OpenBSD as a first choice for sparc64, a stable choice for x86, and a viable option for ppc.
I run Android on an HTC Apache.

Instead of creating a new Win8 thread, i'll add on to this one. So, for those of you interested in following the progress of Windows 8 I have a couple links here. The first one is a preview, with a short five minute video going over some of the features.
http://www.microsoft...poratenews.aspx
This second link is the engineers blog for Windows 8. They have been providing updates of how the project is progressing.

Enjoy.
