PHP Issue with Hosting Company

Posted 15 April 2011 - 06:58 AM

I've found this post on this site so I'm hoping you can help me. I have no idea what PHP is so I'm only guessing this is my problem. Be very gentle with me please.

I host with streamline in the UK. Have built my 1st website and set up one as a test for the Sendmail function. (www.stevie-world.com)

Works OK and redirects to domain after form is submitted. No emails are sent though. I've seen your earlier posts but they mean nothing to me I'm afraid. I can just about use the software that writes the website.

Hosting Company say this (As follows)

a fifth parameter needs to be included in the php code.
Send mail path /usr/sbin/sendmail -fuser\@yourdomain.co.uk
You need to replace -fuser\@domain.co.uk with a valid mailbox on your account: i.e) -froot\@domain.co.uk
An example of how to use this is as follows:
mail($to, $sub, $mess, "From: root@domain.co.uk", "-froot@domain.co.uk");

You sorted this out for a guy a few years back but I need help in idiot proof English.

Below is what I believe to be the php file causing the problem

<?php
/**
 * CoffeeCup Flash Form Builder: Form Results Handler
 *
 * This file is in charge of handling the form results
 * posted from the CoffeeCup Flash Form Builder SWF.
 * It has several primary functions:
 *
 * - Assure that the user is running the proper version of
 * PHP and has properly configured their server for
 * CoffeeCup Flash Form Builder by uploading the provided
 * files and assigning the appropriate server settings
 *   and permissions.
 * - Upload a file if the '$_FILES['Filedata']' variable is
 *   populated
 * - If the '$_POST' superglobal array has been populated,
 *   process the form by:
 * - Reading the config file provided in the '$_POST['xmlfile']'
 *     variable.
 * - Saving the form data to a file if the 'CC_FB_SAVE_FILE' constant
 *     has been populated.
 * - Saving the form data to the database provided in 'CC_FB_DB_ADDRESS'
 * if the 'CC_FB_DB_ADDRESS' constant is populated.
 * - Emailing the form data to the form owner via the address provided
 * in the '$_POST['_ALT_EMAIL']' variable or the '$_POST['mailto']'
 * variable if the '$_POST['_ALT_EMAIL']' variable is not populated.
 * - Emailing the form data to the form user via the address provided in
 * the '$_POST['eM']' variable if the '$_POST['eM']' variable has been
 * populated and the 'emailuser' config option is set to 'true'.
 * - Taking the form user to the landing page provided in the
 * '$_POST['thankyoupage']' variable or to a default landing page
 * if the '$_POST['thankyoupage']' is empty.
 * - Prints out an informational page with version numbers and release
 * dates if an error occurs or if this script is called without
 * the '$_POST' superglobal or the '$_FILES['Filedata']' variables
 *   being set.

I've tried Tech Support at Streamline (Host Co) and CoffeeCup (Software Co) and they both blame each other.

I'm hoping you can help me in some way.

Many Thanks

Re: PHP Issue with Hosting Company

Hi Steve, in PHP there is a function called mail() which takes several parameters or, bits of information to specify how to send the email and who to send it to. Behind this function is an small email program which takes the information and makes a connection to the outgoing mail server and sends the email for you.

This function takes the following information...

To - the email address of the person you are sending to
subject - subject line of the email
message - the body of the email

and then two optional pieces of information...

additional headers - Headers in the email like a who it might be from, the name of the program sending the email for you, perhaps the content type of the email (is it plain text or an HTML email) etc.

additional parameters - this is information you want to pass directly to the email program behind the mail() function. And this is the piece that your host was trying to tell you about.

Your script there fills in the first three required items and specifies the additional headers parameter. This is 4 parameters total. Your host requires that you fill in the 5th one. They are saying that you have to tell the mail program that you must specify the email account you want to use.

In your program you have this line of code (find it in the sendresponseemails function body)...

mail($mail_to,$subject, $form_owner_msg,
"From: {$_POST['eM']}" . CC_FB_SENDMAIL_EOL .$headers_without_from))

Here we see that they specified the mail_to address, the subject, the message to send and filled in the fourth parameter specifying a "from" header. But notice there is no fifth parameter here. What we need to do is add the fifth parameter by specifying your account.

mail($mail_to,$subject, $form_owner_msg,
"From: {$_POST['eM']}" . CC_FB_SENDMAIL_EOL .$headers_without_from, "-fwebmaster@example.com"))

In the modified code above we have specified that the email is coming form "webmaster@example.com". (yes keep the -f part in there). Make sure that you use your email address here, not webmaster@example.com.

Now go through your script and find all the places where you see the mail() function and add in this last parameter. Notice I put a comma and then the address in double quotes. There are a couple places in your script where they use mail(). I pointed out 1 place and in that same line they call it again, so make sure you modify both.

If this is still proving too difficult for you to do, I suggest you hire a programmer fluent in PHP for a 10 minute job and specify the fifth parameter for you.

Hope this helps! :)

Re: PHP Issue with Hosting Company

Thank you for coming back to me so quickly. Even if you do come from a different planet.
I understand what you are saying and will give it a try over the weekend. Thanks again.
I'm more than happy to get someone to program it but would be good to have a go myself in the first instance.

One thing that has happened which means nothing to me as well. While I was waiting for an answer from this site I changed the servers over with the hosting company to Windows from Linux. The message came through to my In-box straight away. I did ask Coffeecup Software (program writers) what this was and they said it "Was as different as Day & Night" This is about as much use to me as a chocolate tea pot.

I've started looking at the difference between ASP and PHP as I think this has something to do with Windows vs Linux. Can you recommend an "Idiots guide to" this sort of stuff?

Thank you once again for your help.
