For the mathematicians

Posted 15 April 2011 - 04:42 PM

You have problably all seen this before, but I thought I would post it just in case. Looks like the FBI is requesting help in solving an old murder case. All they have is two notes from the killer which is crypted. Their top crypters cannot work out the system used. They are hoping someone in the public can. Take a look if this sort of thing interest you.

LINK HERE

It gives you steps to take to try and solve it. I have a feeling it is written in Italien or Hebrew. However, saying that, I managed to make the words "Plant" and "tree" in the second note. Maybe the killer is trying to tell us that he planted a tree, lol. :bananaman:

Thanks for the link! I really enjoyed reading it. We actually did some RSA in class a few months ago, and it was really interesting. It's funny though that the FBI can't break it.

We had a thread on this, it was rather interesting.

IMO, random notes the guy was working on to improve say, his own algorithm. Probably mean nothing to his murder.

We should all write a random bunch of letters with no meaning on a note and keep it on us at all times. Then if we are unfortunate enough to be murdered, atleast we can look down and have some fun while people try to solve the meaningless notes :whistling:

has anyone considered that it's just random letters? i hate to be a party pooper but it seems like a simpler solution than an encryption method so advanced that the top cryptanalysts can't crack it. if it is encrypted i doubt that uses any orthodox encryption methods sense the guy had no formal education.

edit:
@nick2price: gonna do it, everyone is gonna think im some kind of mastermind now ;)
