How Can I Upgrade My OpenGL version?

Posted 21 April 2011 - 10:26 AM

Using my Windows7 computer, I made a simple program that tells me what my OpenGL version number is:
cout << glGetString(GL_VERSION);

And the output is:
2.1.0 - Build 8.15.10.2302

I am half shocked as how it would be obvious that Microsoft would support DirectX 11 and not much OpenGL. So my request/problem is: How can I upgrade my OpenGL development version so that I may use 3/3.1/4?

Also, when I'm using glGenBuffers(), MVC++ says it's not a function, but I imported the gl/glu headers (along with glfw), and the docs say it's available in OpenGL 1.5+. :dontgetit:

You shouldn't be. Microsoft only support their own technologies well for obvious reasons. :)

For your glGenBuffers problem, the order you declare your headers is important. Are you including any other libraries as they may have their own headers.

Try putting this before your includes if you are adding any libraries, hell just try it anyway :)

#define GL_GLEXT_PROTOTYPES

That did the trick!
Now about this OpenGL update... that program I have in my previous post has been running for the past hour, and it's still on the Loading screen...

Ah.. stop it, and restart? Run it in admin mode? Clearly an hour is not right.

As far as I know, this is an in-browser program, and haven't seen the option for a downloadable program yet.

The version of OpenGL is not up to Microsoft or the Operation System distributors. It's up to the graphics card vendors and their drivers. Mostly you can not update the OpenGL, because the latest that your GPU supports comes with the drivers.

You know that you can boot camp windows 7 on mac. If not check out This link ;D

heyoman1 just forget about upgrading OpenGl to 3/3.1/4 from 2.1, because that is nearly impossible task.

Yeah, well aware but then frankly a simple java utility should run quick and fine.. and it's not. So the new game is how far off from normal is this setup?
