OleDb database bug, file size on windows 98SE way bigger? (.mdb)

Posted 22 April 2011 - 10:18 AM

Hi, I have an odd symptom where when I parse information from a text file and fill a database, the database becomes very large on windows 98 machines, but on windows 7 machines, the .mdb file stays pretty small. To make things especially odd, when I transfer the windows 98SE database over to windows 7 and open it with access 2007, the database automatically shrinks down to a reasonable size.

Does anyone know what's going on here?

Looks like I fixed it. Turns out ixquicking "oledb windows 98 large" actually yielded some good advice on the subject. MDAC and Jet 4.0 engine are the two things that could be responsible in this case. MDAC is buggy and leaking in all versions before 2.8, so I updated that (apparently the first time I grabbed it, I got the 2.6 release). But the thing that actually fixed my problem was getting JET 4.0 SP8 OLEDB for Windows 9x.
