Fact or Fiction: Science Careers and PhD's worthless

Posted 25 April 2011 - 12:47 PM

I just rolled along these two (2) articles while going through some news today. I thought they we're pretty negative personally. I was curious to see what others opinions we're regarding this topic; I'd also like to hear from those who actually have a PhD/Degree in Comp Sci. I know the second article is fairly dated, I thought I would post it anyway.

Here are the links to the story's:

I am an engineer/scientist with a degree and I work in that industry and I see people living quite well with little worry about being outsourced/fired/not paid. I have pretty decent job security and reasonable pay.

NO COMPLAINTS HERE. THANKS SCIENCE!

Easily solved via changes to the way patent rules work between universities and their staff researchers. The one article is one-sided bullshit because the science jobs it holds up as "useless" are university research positions versus the private sector:

Quote

Consider someone taking the kind of high IQ and drive that would be required to obtain a tenure-track position at U.C. Berkeley and going into medicine. This person would very likely be a top specialist of some sort, earning at least $300,000 per year.

No shit? Wow. So I guess folks like Dow, Siemens, Monsanto, Kodak, Union Carbide, ATM, Archer Daniels, etc are lousy places to work or they don't hire scientists or if they do they don't pay them anything? Way to cherry pick a quote there.

No, what's needed is to make the typical compensation scientists make a lot more general public knowledge as well as the benefits of such work (stock options, patent royalties, etc).

Further, the government could do a lot worse than easing some of the tax restrictions on high tech and bioscience firms so that firms in other countries may wish to consider basing here or relocating entirely.

I found the second article to be one sided as well. I also agree on your public knowledge point regarding "typical compensations and benefits, etc". I was posting these links in the hopes of seeing what the more senior members of the community have to say. Seeing as I am a student looking to enter Computer Science next year, I found the second article to seem a little far fetched.

Just wanted to point this out...

Your "Career Guide" link contains 16 links (Above the "Commandments of Computer Science" portion of the page). Fifteen of these links lead to an area named "humor". As such, I shall choose to take your "news source" with several grains of salt.

Both articles sound like FUD and/or Irony.

Promote the idea that Science, Technology and the sort AREN'T the direction the world is heading? Really... and what 3 year old are you trying to convince this of?

Sorry, to clarify. The Slashdot story was the original "news" story I read. I found the second article by following a hyperlink on the Slashdot page to that authors website. While in the process of browsing said website, I ran along that article (second Link). I decided to post that article to see the opinion of the community. I was not in any way trying to state that the article or the web page/author was a verified and accurate source of news/information.

I'm going to go ahead and throw the flag on that one. It seems like these days we are in the only good field.

I am unsure as to how showing a company that you studied and got a PhD/Degree in comp sci, could be negative at all but thats just imho.

I didn't see much that was credible in either link.

Regardless, a Ph.D is not the correct career choice for everyone. I've always though that you should get a Ph.D. when you wanted to pursue research in your field or become a professor. Otherwise you should go and be involved in your field (i.e. get a job) after a couple years of experience then deciding to take a break and get your Masters/Ph.D. However, I think its really field specific.

I think that getting any of a Bachelors/Masters/Ph.D in Computer Science is fine. I don't plan on getting a masters/Ph.d until i've had a couple of years experience.

I agree with ShakesSpears. I read somewhere (cant find the link) that you should do PHD if you want to stay at university as the research guy. If you want to gain PHD to make more money its not worth it since the proportion of time spend at uni and salary is the best for people with Masters degree.
Anyway, doing PHD is NO harm but is it worth it?

I wouldn't say it's "NO" harm.

You will likely put yourself in a position to be turned down for jobs by being "overqualified", Dr. 9576.

I'm not seeing market value for almost any degree out there right now.

What I am seeing are people with GEDs and HS diplomas making as much as people with BS degrees etc. Usually HR justifies by saying they "have relevant experience" or are "equal opportunity employees".

I work in IT so I am seeing this alot. They seem like they want to hire the most under qualified people they can find and give them a job. I don't get it, I have multiple degrees and I am willing to work for the same wage.

I think the "overqualified" card gets played a lot.

I hate the burst that bubble but its proven that a bs degree with earn more than the field equivalent hs or associate degree. Definitely an odd trend you see, but I doubt that's a global statistic.

I will agree though that a phd will likely scare away a lot of employers unless your heart is set on IT management.
