Your opinion on Ubuntu 11.04 : Natty Narwhal

Posted 29 April 2011 - 09:06 AM

So I've just upgraded, and I hate it. Has anyone else made the change yet?

I hate the whole unity desktop. I hate not being able to modify my panels. I hate that it looks like it was made for a tablet.

It took me a few good minutes of poking around just to find the system settings. I honestly feel like this is a step backward from 10.10.

With my old installation I liked to tweak it a little to get it to my liking, but I don't think there is any possible amount of "tweaking" to be done on Natty which could make me satisfied.

I watched an intro video on omgubuntu, saying that this is the first in the future of Ubuntu. So looks like I'm either going to be left behind on 10.10 (which I plan on downgrading to later today) or moving over to fedora

They have gone way to far trying to make it the "easiest to use" free OS, and they eventually killed it. RIP Ubuntu.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 1

I'm really excited about it and I'm torrenting it as I type this. The new unity UI looks gorgeous! :D

The only thing that bums me out is that it seems that it doesn't work well when used in a virtual setting. My linux boxes are actually VMWare machines so I probably won't be able to use Unity.

I can say that the software center is fantastic and really simple, which is a step in the right direction. :)

It bugs the crap out of me that the min/max buttons are on the "wrong" side. I've switched them back with every iteration ( gconftool-2 -t string --set /apps/metacity/general/button_layout menu:minimize, maximize, close .) I may suck it up and try to deal with them this time.

I poked around 11.04 a little in beta. Not thrilled, but looks like a good call for the coming storm of tablets. Of course, most of those tablets will be running Android...

I'm actually excited about Wayland, but it's not enabled by default yet.

I'll let you know in a few weeks.

There's always the option of installing Gnome or KDE or any of the other window managers. Just because they use Unity by default doesn't mean you have to use it.

I actually though this was going to be a pain but it has gnome ready from the get-go.

For anyone who was wondering, when you go to log in you get the choice to load desktop ubuntu or ubuntu(classic). Classic is just the gnome desktop. Really simple to switch between the two.

Although, when I load it this way, some things are a little sluggish, such as docky; yet it runs smooth in unity. Odd, but I can live without docky :)

I am upgrading a virtual machine at this point. I am just annoyed at how much space the fricking upgrade is taking on my VM's HDD. I am down to 166 MB disk space left (I had a lot more before I began the update). I know already the first thing I am going to do is uninstall crap I don't want (which I am hoping there will be a lot of given how much space it is taking).

I will post back once I have decided if I will keep it or go back to 10.4 (or whatever I had before, it was pre-10.10).

It also annoys me that the power usage was increased between 10 and 30%...

Hah, I won't be "upgrading" any time soon. Assuming I can restore my VM to what it was before I will at least have a working machine again.

Went through the install and everything fine, cleanred everything up great, went to reboot and I get the grub terminal. Tell it to boot and it says "no image found".

I hardly think that's an issue with Ubuntu if that's what you're implying. If you're using VMWare you can take Snapshots and easily revert without touching any OS settings in the VM.

I hate unity. Gnome 3 is better, but I don't like it either. Moved to KDE as they are not doing those dummy GUI's.

No, I am not saying it is Ubuntu's fault. It just adds to the frustration.

Thankfully I do make snapshots on a regular basis before updating so I was able to get back to where I was.

As for the power consumption. That is totally their fault.

So should I cancel the upgrade after fetching 1229 files? :sarcasm:

I have no problems with 10.10 but the fact that there will be no more support is kinda scary.
I might end up switching to slackware though.

No support?

Ubuntu supports all it's versions, though updates to a former version will dwindle over time. If you don't want to change that often, choose the LTS (Long Term Support) version, 10.04.

Slackware is fun, but it's an entirely difference beastie. If you wanted to go that route, I'd also look at Arch. If you don't like change, Debian or CentOS are probably good choices.

Well, just bit the bullet and installed a new VM on my desktop. Sadly I can't tell you what additions were made to Ubuntu 11.04 because it says I don't have good enough hardware (I am pretty sure I do... I can run starcraft 2 at highest settings...). Oh well, it just seems like plain old ubuntu to me.
