Many in the gaming industry say that Java cannot be used for gaming because it is not close enough to the hardware, it is slow, and a number of other things. Well, it is farther away from the hardware than say, C++, but its Graphics libraries ARE capable enough to build games with. In addition, the OOP constructs that Java forces you to use exhibit good programming style, which is extremely beneficial in large programs like games.

So the challenge goes like this:

You have until August 8th, 2011, 8:00 Eastern to write any game using any library of your choice, as long as it is a Java-based game. You must submit your project (preferably in a compiled form), which includes the code and any resources needed to make it. This is because you will not just be judged on how well the game works, but also on how well the code is structured.

If we can get enough people involved (greater than 5), I'll see about getting the winner a neat physical prize in addition to a badge indicating that you won. So get your friends involved!

I made a simple game with the Java Monkey Engine a few years back as a class project. If I can figure out how to upload it here (max single file size is 2 MB ) I will.

(It would be for an example, not the contest).

Definitely going to make something for this competition!

In order to submit the app, you might have to use something like Google Code, SourceForge, GitHub, or anything of your choice...as long as we can download the code and test the app.
