In Search of a New Hosting Provider!

Posted 24 January 2007 - 01:23 PM

Hey guys-

I've got quite a few web projects on my plate that I'd really like to turn into a reality (one of them is going to be a Mother's Day present for my mom). Anyway, I already have a host that's pretty cheap, although not very flexible. I'm looking to re-locate and get these sites up ASAP.

These are my requirements
  • Multiple VirtualHosts - I'll be purchasing domain names at an alarming rate (probably end with about 10 of them). I need VirtualHost support for all of these on one box, with one cost. I think the cost should be bandwidth based, not VirtualHost quantity based.
  • PHP5, MySQL 5, and Python 2.4|2.5 - I don't think there are many hosts WITHOUT the first two, the last might be lacking. I might also need support for having various python libraries added.
  • Shell access - This is not a must, but it's as close of a must as a "nice to have" can get. This makes management convenient for me.
  • Mail support - This is actually just a "nice to have" that I don't think I'll get. I would like to have mail for every domain a I register handled on this server with the MX record stuff set.

I've thought about going to RackSpace, but they are extremely expensive, and I don't know if I can really afford that. Anyone else have a good spot to go? I really don't want to end up shelling out for my own hosting (it'll probably mean a new box...)

If your looking for full dedicated access at a fair price, and don't want to shell out for a full dedicated server, I would look into Mediatemple's (dv) Dedicated Virtual found at - http://www.mediatemp.../webhosting/dv/

Which I believe offers everything your looking for...

If you looking for a slightly cheaper option, I'm on MT's GridServer, it offers a great 1-size-fits-all hosting platform, a lot of great features including SSH access, 100 domains, tons of bandwidth and space all for $20 a month.

Dream.In.Code is currently hosted with http://www.SoftLayer.com

They have dedicated servers, but they are all unmanaged. Prices are very competitive.

I use bluehost and their serice is excellent. Here is a link: http://www.bluehost.com/

They give Python, PHP 4 or 5 (you choose) and a lot more. You can have up to 6 domains on one account, and be parked on up to 20 at once, (all you have to do is register the domain name for about $2 with then and it is all good)

dreamhost.

and just search google for "redemption coupon" or whatever they call it when you sign up for a great deal.

300 gigs of space and 2 tbs of space for 29 bucks a year with that discount. works for me.

Hell yeah. I am switching as soon as I can. Their allowed bandwidth is crazy. Pricing is not bad either.

yup, i currently share a server on dreamhost and it's more than enough space for me.. plus i don't have time to finish it anyway. It's very cheap and has just about everything you could need.
