Implementing video compression in C++

Posted 22 May 2011 - 08:18 AM

Hi everyone

This is my first post here so I'll try my best to explain my problem in as much detail as I can. I have to implement a video compression/conversion, such as avi to mp4, from first principles using C/C++ as part of a project. I have been doing some research about this, but all the documents that I have come across so far have an extremely vague discussion about the topic and all the forums I have seen with similar queries only say that "you should use google". So my question is this, does anyone know of a good book or website that discusses video compression in detail? Specifically when using C++.

Thanks in advance

You could probably start by looking here -> http://www.ffmpeg.org/

Have a long read, and join the mailing lists. Maybe the regulars over there have better resources that may be of some help.

But "from first principles" (not using any pre-existing library) will be a big ask IMO.
Modern video codec is VERY heavy on the maths.
