I remember a game I used to play a while ago called Endless Online. It was duplicated using an emulator, and private servers started popping up around the community.
Along with the C++ programmers that where created from the servers (C++ was a must-know to create your own server), the graphics where copyrighted by the original owners, and thus created quite a few talented pixel artists.
I'm not sure if pixel artists are in high demand these days (at least in this fashion, though I guess they could be hired by mobile development companies that like to make classic RPGs), but I find it's good practice.
