Javascript book for beginner recommendation

Posted 25 May 2011 - 04:33 PM

I will be taking javascript in the Fall and I wanted to get a book for the summer ahead of time to study besides the required book for the class. I'll be going to Books A Million. Any suggestions?

"Javascript a beginners guide" - third edition,
"Javascript The Definitive Guide" - Fifth Edition,
and as a reference:
"jQuery Visual QuickStart Guide"

Hi,

Head First Javascript is a pretty good intro to Javascript and also covers basic programming principles. Like all the books in the Head First series it takes a unique approach to teaching and can be a fun, informative read with lots of exercises to apply what you learn.

Thank you both for your posts. I could not wait any longer last night so I went and picked a book after looking through the small selection they had and I thought Head First would be a good book to prep with before taking the class which would have a more serious approach but I will definitely still look into the others as well. Why limit myself to just one if there is time!

There are many e-books you can download off the internet for free, if you don't mind reading an electronic copy of the book. PDFCHM has a vast resource of Information Technology e-books ranging from Javascript to whatever else technology-related you can think of. If you sign up with the site, you'll be able to download the books free. If I really like the e-book I usually buy a hard copy too.

Here's a sample of the listing for Javascript books on the website:

Beginning Javascript, 9780470525937 (0470525932), Wrox Press, 2009
Javascript Step by Step, 9780735645523 (0735645523), Microsoft Press, 2010
Javascript: The Good Parts, 9780596517748 (0596517742), O'Reilly, 2008
Beginning HTML, XHTML, CSS, and Javascript (Wrox Programmer to Programmer), 9780470540701 (0470540702), Wrox Press, 2009
Javascript Bible, 9780470526910 (0470526912), John Wiley & Sons, 2010
Object-Oriented Javascript, 9781847194145 (1847194141), Packt Publishing, 2008
Javascript for Programmers, 9780137001316 (0137001312), Prentice Hall, 2009
Pro Javascript with MooTools (Expert's Voice in Web Development), 9781430230540 (1430230541), Apress, 2010
Javascript by Example (2nd Edition), 9780137054893 (0137054890), Prentice Hall, 2010

And many more...

Good luck with your studies in the fall.

The good thing about having an e-book when you're doing development work is you can do a quick search by word for terms you are trying to find, great especially when the book doesn't have a glossary.
