Speaking of game prices, here's FF13 for about 14~17 bucks or so:

"Hmmm, 5 dollars for Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind you say?"... "What?! That comes with a developer kit too?!?". I've been happily occupied with the same game FOREVER. Hell, I just bought Dead Space a month ago. You don't need to be up with the latest and greatest to enjoy games

Not to mention that you NEVER need to spend ANY money if you want to play video games. Just develop games that you enjoy playing, and have fun playing them.

Wait, what?
I have been waiting for Final Fantasy 13 for years, and I still refuse to buy it because it's still $40 (about a year later).

Ugh. I wanted this game to kick ass so bad...and it just didn't. Almost all the FF games have been linear, but my god, this was literally 20 hours of corridors before you get to an open hub. Corridors. And you're fairly removed from the combat. I mean, it can get frantic during boss fights because you're swapping paradigms rapidly, but it still feels like less of a game and more of a long series of CG. I was very disappointed. I miss FFX. I realize that people usually fall back to FF7 or 6, but honestly, I loved the hell out of 10. It was a very "by the book" Final Fantasy.
Anyway, back on topic. I agree totally with whoever said steam. I checked with some steam calcualtor, and I have a library that would have cost me about $1500 if I had bought all the games at their current prices. But Steam runs sales all the time, and around Christmas, their sales are unbelievable. Like, every game a publisher has made for $80. Or this pack of 10 indie games for $5.
Steam is definitely the way to go.
Also, be glad that you're not buying games in Europe or Australia. In fact, the AUD is stronger than the dollar right now (by a few cents), and they still pay about 100AUD for new games. GOG.com actually will either refund you the difference or give you store credit for the difference when they can't refund if you buy games from them. Also, they sell lots of older games that have been optimized to run on newer platforms.

Yeah, I bought L4D2 for like $7 thanks to Steam when it was still running $20ish dollars. At the time I couldn't even run it due to my shit computer, but it was such a good deal I couldn't resist.

I'd agree with the Steam sentiment...if I wasn't a massive impulse spender....kinda still haven't played all the games I bought during the New Year's Sale, kinda dropped 300 bucks before I even realized it...

Luckily I never spent that much in a single go, but I did notice that I can be an impulsive buyer as well. As a result, I force myself to only buy games when my back-catalog gets empty and if they are on sale -- I was able to restrain myself for over seven months now. Currently my back-catalog has five games... (That should last me the whole year.

Why complain about the price of video games when the rent is too damn high?

It was the 70 dollar game packs that got me actually...in the end, they did introduce me to a lot of games I like that I wouldn't have known about otherwise...but it also introduced me to a lot of crap. For instance, the Paradox pack introduced me to Sword of the Stars, a game I really like...however...it also introduced me to Ship Simulator Extremes....which...was something.

The only time I've ever spent 70 bucks on one game, at least in a single purchase, was Arc the Lad collection for ps1. I still own this game as it was one of the very few games that survived the exodus when I was unemployed a year ago. Great little collection that all came in one package with a hardback instruction booklet and everything. This was back when limited editions of games actually gave you more than just a piece of artwork from the developers. Back in the days where you actually GOT something for your money.

... same here, most I ever spent on a single game as well was Arc the Lad.
And this is from a guy who owns the PAL version of Panzer Dragoon Saga (found some guy in New Jersey who had it for 10 dollars, he didn't know what it was he had, at the time it was valued around 100 USD, today it easily sells for like 250).
