Duck Duck Go

Posted 06 June 2011 - 04:26 AM

I know many of you use DuckDuckGo.com as your main search engine, I know I do. So I thought it would be a good idea to get !dic as a bang tag!

Basically, this allows you to type "!dic <search query>" into DDG (or your search bar if it is set to DuckDuckGo) then it will automatically take you to the Dream In Code search results page.

If you do not already use DDG, benefits include:
  • Privacy. They do not track you.
  • Lots of information from front page
  • Affiliated with sites such as Wolfram Alpha for more accurate results
  • It is run by one person with help of the DDG community. A lot of the code is open sourced and he is often in the IRC. Unlike places like Google, results are not made more accurate by tracking people, but rather by feedback from the community!
  • You can use !dic.. what more do you want?! There is also !gi (google images), !g (google), !y (yahoo), as well as many other sites

Hopefully many of you will find this useful.

Shane

Heard all about it, haven't really used it but I like the results it produces. I just might have to start using it more.

One of the bigger problems is like me since I use chrome for everything mostly, I can just type my term in the address bar a viola! 30 pages of crap and eventually something useful.

Not quite sure what you mean? If you want Duck Duck Go from URL bar then just set the default search engine to DDG. It is great because even if you want to search a different site (like DIC) you just type the bang tag in as well.. all from your url bar!

I have it as default on both Chrome and Firefox, works flawlessly.

I like duckduckgo, but I can't bring myself to trust it. In a lot of cases, duckduckgo finds nothing while Google finds all sorts of stuff that I'm looking for. I don't want to go back to google every time duckduckgo shits the bed. I can save time just by using google.

And honestly, I'm not worried about my privacy from google that much. I have an android cell phone; they already know everything they could possibly want to know about me.
