Logo design, tell me what you think

Posted 06 June 2011 - 12:34 PM

Hi,

I created a logo for my coding company (we do design too but we focus on coding).
It's quite simple but tell me what you think.

Thank you,

Well.. that's a pretty austere logo. Is that a custom type face, or something like Arial?

Honestly the purple annoys me - I would have to see this in the context of the rest of the site.

Also that's not really a logo. It's more of the company name and a slogan. Logos, to me, always seem to be images. Like the Olympic rings, Nike swoosh, or the DIC d.

The color difference between the top color and the bottom color for the 'coding-tech' part needs to be greater.

Also the slogan seems trite and contrived. You might want to rework that.

I like the coding style thing with the <-- and the />. I am not a fan of the purple either as well. Also I would try to make it more like a logo and less just like text.

I couldn't have said it any better. Think about it this way. When you think about Apple Inc. you think of the actual apple logo. When you think Windows you think of the 4 colored window that's on your screensaver. When you think McDonald's you think of the yellow M. Here's some more examples:

Playboy - The bunny.
Nike - The checkmark or swoosh or whatever you want to call it.
Toyota - Their emblem that is on the front of everyone of their cars.
MTV - I don't know how to explain their logo.

I'm sure you get the point.

no offense to your work, im sure that you've put in alot of time and thinkings to it... but it looks so simple, that its almost similar to the ones you can get for free on one of those banner generators on google. maybe a different font? or add in something different to show (the company's) uniqueness... to be honest im not totally attracted to it XD

sorry for the negative comment. i hope you know what i mean. :)

Negativity is good. You have to tell me what you think.
It was more to put on my invoices but let me think of a real logo :P

Thanks for the comments

modi123_1 : I'm not sure on which definition of austere you're using. If you're referring to its simple look, then yes I would agree. Sometimes (I am of the opinion, all times) simple can be more beneficial than anything complex. The typeface looks to be Futura, a geometric sans-serif. It's commonly used to be a "modern-looking" choice, but honestly it never does that good of a job.

A logo is not just an image, but can be any simple mark. Take for example FedEx. Their logo (a beautifully designed wordmark by Landor Assoc.) is simply their name in a custom typeface based on Univers and Futura. Not as well designed but more computer-related is Microsoft's logo; which is also a wordmark. Ford's logo is a wordmark in a circle. Logos can be simple images, complex images or just words. It's mostly the context in which they are used.

nightscream : Some suggestions:

I do see the concept you are trying to display, but are you sure that HTML markup is your best choice? The name implies more than just HTML, but the choice of concept could make it so people only think of HTML.

In regards to typeface choice, I don't think that Futura is a good idea. Ironically, something more suited to coding (a Monospace face for example) may be a better choice. I wouldn't go extra generic like Courier, but maybe something like Monaco or DejaVu Sans Mono Bold (possibly make it lowercase as well)? Edit after writing: Looking back, I notice that that would make your mark look very similar to DIC's wordmark. Personally I would aim for a different concept, but it's up to you.

For colors, use whatever you feel fits into the overall design concept. If that's lavender, then so be it. If you're placing these on invoices, use black. It'll be better, trust me.

Take out the gradient. There's no need for it, so just rip that thing out of there.

I hope I pointed you in the right direction.

Cheers,
Bryan
