Probably the biggest trick to making a successful website, is to make a site that people WANT to visit. What type of site do you have? Do you sell anything? Do you offer any services? Do you have a nice color scheme as to not hurt the eyes of the person visiting? Show us the site and give us some info on it and perhaps we can offer specific advice.

SEO has already been mentioned, but there is more to having a successful site than that. It is very important that you market your site as well. Depending on the type of site you can send emails to people at TechCrunch and see if they want to cover you, or you could make a post on HN and you might get a few hits.

I'm not sure what type of advice you wish to receive. Here are some of the most basic pointers.

Search Engine Optimization

1. In the meta description tag in the head of the website,in the name attrribute use thoughtful descriptive text.

2. be certain that each of your webpages has a h1 header tag.

Basic level Programming

1. create a simple based javascript, or php website visitor / Member counter program to self promote your website's reputation.

2. to improve performance and simplicity of maitenancing your website, slice the majority of each of your webpages up into a html.php include file.

Colour Theory

1.Use a complementary colour scheme as a website color theme
or use a analogous color scheme as a website color theme, as these are the most commonly practiced.
