What software should a CIS student use

Posted 17 June 2011 - 09:28 AM

my academic dean requested a list of any software to install on the student lab computers and so far my list is rather short
  • Visual studios 2008
  • DevC++
  • Eclipse
  • XAMPP
  • Wire shark

any other ideas would be very hepful
this list is due in just about an hour so if it gets too late i sorry but your idea may not make the final list

Let's ask a different question- what programming languages need to be covered. Obviously you want the basics (word processing, internet browser, etc.). Is Graphic Design a concern?

What classes are offered? Are there Java classes, Android classes, C/C++ classes, etc.? The more information you give us, the better we can help you.

GIMP is a free image editing tool more on par with Photoshop. You might add that to your list.

I believe there is Visual Studio 2010 out, and if I recall correctly, it supports C++. Also, I'm not a C++ guy, but I believe Dev-C++ is antiquated.

For Java, you might consider something a little more lightweight as well, like JCreator LE. There are also the NetBeans people, so that and Eclipse would be nice to have. Make sure the JDK is installed as well, for Java 6.

Thinking about this some more, for the web class, do you all do any server-side development with languages like PHP, ASP.NET, ColdFusion, etc.? It might be worth it to make sure a server is set up with one of those languages and a database engine (MySQL is a good, free one).

i understand DevC++ is old but in my experience it was a very easy program to use and learn on we tried to use LCC or something like that this term but it proved to be a very complicated IDE to teach the students to use.
the school is already loaded down with VS2008 so i dont think they plan on going to 2010 but i am making the suggestion for it
and i do appreciate your help and thought behind your questions and answers it opened my eyes a little wider

Stroustrup has a list of compilers you can check out. Stay away from the ones that say "Borland" or "Turbo" in them, and do your research on the others if you want to suggest an upgrade. Visual Studio, from what I understand, has a decent compiler, so it may be worth it to recommend Visual Studio for the C++ class.

Glad I could help! :)

Also on the subject of Visual Studio 2010, you can recommend the DreamSpark program to the department. It's free software and tools to students and includes Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Professional.
