Have You Got Hurt While On The Job?

Posted 18 June 2011 - 09:27 AM

Hey everyone, I currently work at Staples as an Easy Tech Associate. Yesterday, I was on the ladder putting items in overstock. I started to get down to help a customer when I missed a step and fell. I dislocated my knee in the process and will have to stay off of it for a few days and then I'll be in a knee brace that covers most of my leg for 6 weeks or longer.

My question is have you gotten hurt on the job and what happened?

Years ago during my manual labor days I was a mold changer. My job was to remove the life half & dead half of molds to be taken to maintenance for repairs.

Once I had unbolted the life half of a disk shaped mold, but it wasn't coming lose. I changed positions to get a better look but it just would not budge. So stupidly I stuck my head in to see. The mold let go, smashed my head & fell onto my arm. I suffered only slight burns, nothing that two days of gauze & ointment couldn't heal. I was really lucky it hit my helmet & not my face.

Luckily it was really small, like 5 pounds. For anyone that doesn't know by my descitipion : here is a small example :

Course I was making washing machine parts & not Comordore computers.

Also these ones go left & right, the one I was working on was on it's side, so it went up & down, thus why my head was in there.

Fell off a ladder and broke the worst bone in my wrist. It had some kind of blood vessel that ran through it, and had to wear a cast for 6 months.

The reason I fell was due to another injury to my back and was not supposed to be on a ladder.
The following week I had back surgey for a herniated disc that was pinching my sciatic nerve and causing other problems.

So the moral of the story is to get as many painkillers as you can. You build up a tolerence fast. So instead of taking them everyday save them up and take like 8 to 12 of them with a 12 pack of beer once a week or so.

No, I don't see any point in it. In my training I had to watch a video on using the ladder and in my rush to help the customer I didn't follow the safety steps which is why I fell. So if I sued I'd just I'd just lose anyways.

I used to be an electrician and we were blocking off a church parking lot so I was putting up a blockade to the entrance and was walking backwards, my heel caught the edge of a bumper and I feel backwards landing on my tailbone and breaking it on the bumper. The guy I was working with took me back to the office (worst truck ride of my life) and I waddled up to my boss and said, "Boss, I broke my ass". Then went to the doctor.

I got hurt whilst helping a friend's dad tear down a shed for money, once.

We where tearing off the roof of the shed, and trying to knock it down at the same time. We had ropes attacked to beams on the inside and where pulling them, trying to pull it down, and one of the beams, which was conveniently halfway rotted, broke/shattered and fell on top of my foot, breaking my big toe.

I still got paid and my friend's dad paid for my x-rays :).

I was an electrician for most of my adult life and while working for my father there was really only 1 rule. If you fall off of a ladder, you're fired before you hit the ground.

Shit, I fell off so many ladders and through new construction ceilings (just the wood framing). I'd just jump back up there and continue my run. The mexicans loved me.

Like 2 years ago.

And my use of the word "whilst" has been happening a lot lately, as has the term "what-not".
